WOWScribe 3.00

WoWScribe is a small addon that allows you to log the chat channels of your
choice (including the numbered channels).

The chat is logged to "[WOW directory]/Logs/WoWChatLog.txt";. If you have an existing chat log text file, you may need to delete it before using WOWScribe. You may also want to periodically rename your log file, such as "WoWChatLog.20081017.txt";. This will keep the log file from growing too large.

Features:

You can set any chat channel (i.e. say, guild, raid, whispers, emotes, general)

Installation:

If you already have a "[WOW directory]/Interface/Addons" directory, skip to Step 4.

If you have never installed an addon, you must create the Addons directory:

1.  Go to your WoW installation directory.

2.  If the folder "Interface" does not exist, create it.

3.  In the folder "Interface", create the folder "Addons".

4.  Move/Copy the WoWScribe directory to the "Addons" folder.

Usage:

/wscribe
all by itself will give you the usage statement

/wscribe start
    starts the logging

/wscribe stop
    stops the logging

/wscribe status
    displays the current settings

/wscribe add <channelname or number>
adds the channel to the list being logged.
using 'basic' as the channel will turn on guild, say, and emotes

/wscribe remove <channelname or number>
removes the channel from the list being logged
using 'all' as the channel will turn all off

All commands and chat channel names are case insensitive.

Default channels logged are guild, say, and emotes.

  • I left WOW shortly after the 3.0 patch (which I hated), but I may be returning soon. If I do, I will investigate adding some kind of log rotation, as well as fixing the bugs with Raid channels, etc.

    Thank you for your suggestions.

I would like to see an options panel that would allow you to seperate logs by day if you wanted. The reason i use this is to log guild chats to deal with troublesome guild members as one of my GM duties. Being able to have the mod automaticaly rename the chatlog to something with that days date and then generate a new file would help this proccess alot

I do agree also about the comment SilverShadow said maybe to combat that you can have the addon check the length of the file and if it is close or at the limit auto rename and make a new file like change it to something like chatlog_part1.txt

  • Ok, just tried it out tonight and I don't know what you can do about a couple things but here they are:

If you already have a chatlog.txt file or whatever, then wowscribe will NOT WORK. It will work ingame, but when you exit to open the file, it's your previous file, not the new stuff.

That being said, the chatlog.txt has a max length. If you reach that length, then wowscribe cuts off. Period. No warning.

A few cosmetic things, when I tell it to log whispers, I'm getting the API code. Same with Raid Leader and Raid Warning (both of which are now technically separate channels).

Wouldn't mind seeing a Fubar plugin or even a reminder to go swap out your chatlog.txt file.
