  • About WoW Dings
  •

WoW Dings allows you to add funny symbols into your chat messages such as smilies, arrows, hearts etc. Just type the code corresponding to the symbol you want in your message, it will be automatically replaced. For example, :) will be replaced by ?, (l) will become ? and so on. Of course, other players do not need the addon to see the symbols you insert.

Doesn't work for /say, /yell and /raidwarning messages.

Type /wd to display the list of available symbols.

  • I rewrote the Russian substitution code in your CharMap.lua file. Currently, it substitutes a Russian character that LOOKS like the English letter, so I made it substitute the phonetic equivalent for an English letter or diphthong - so D rather than A becomes Д, and SH rather than W becomes Щ.

However, if I "RU" the same message three times, it substitutes the letters three different ways, even though I just did Shift-Up to repeat my last message. The English input is the same every time, but the output differs each time for some odd reason. It's really inconsistent.

Any idea why it's doing this?

  • Also, occasionally, words in the middle of a sentence will not even be replaced at all, along with the inconsistencies.

"Ya sibya ploha chustvuyu" was sent as "Йa себя ploha чувствую" instead of the correct "Я себя плохо чувствую". This would suggest that it's a script error rather than a translation error. Any idea what could account for this in your code?

  • Haha ! :)

The "Russian substitution" is the hidden feature of this addon :) It's designed to replace some latin characters by russian ones that looks alike (but not sounds alike). It's a secret feature made just for fun it's not supposed tu be used for translation. One letter can be replaced by one or many other letters, chosen randomly it's why you don't always have the same result.

I think it's a great idea to make an addon that allows to write in russian with latin characters. Feel free to reuse my code to make a working one :)

Lenwe: This addon has a conflict with MyRolePlay and possibly other FlagRSP roleplaying mods that will (at least) corrupt your character description as seen by other people.

That's because it replaces \1, \2, \3 and \n even when they're sent by addons.

This is a bug in WoWdings, not in MyRolePlay. A workaround is possible simply by removing the affected patterns. See below link for details:

    http://forums.moonshyne.org/index.php?topic=134.0

Note that in particular Blizzard no longer allow you to send the \r character in chat messages. If you do, the line you send will be truncated at that position (which is why MyRolePlay now uses \123-type character escaping).

Thanks for providing a simple mod that entertained my guildies, who ran into this one. :)

  • Unfortunately, it's not possible. The symbols come from the "Arial Narrow" included in World of Warcraft. BTW, it's perharps possible to make an addon to replace some string patterns by .blp textures in the chat console but only people having this such addon would see it.

Cool mod, been using past 2 weeks. Would be even cooler if u could use the smilies from msn into it somehow.

It would be pretty cool, but we won't be seeing this soon.

If we was to get the ones from MSN, someone would have to take the image of it, convert it into a text image, then send it to Blizzard for them to install into their text format, which would be impossible.

  • The symbols from WoW Dings are not made by Blizzard, but belongs to the standard Arial Narrow font. There is no way to add new symbols.

  • When I told my party to "RUN FOR THE ELEVATOR" I found that starting a sentence with RU will make all the letters appear in Russian (RU). Are there any others like this? Because this wasn't listed in /WD.
