  • About Town Guard
  •

Future versions of Town Guard will appear as part of the new WoW++ project.

Summary

Never ask a guard again! Town Guard adds multiple icons to your minimap while you're in any city, village or outpost, whether guards are available in that location or not. The icons appear for a short time after you enter an area, then move out of your way until you mouse over the minimap. These icons are visibly distinguishable (they're not all red flags), and indicate locations guards don't even know about, including repair merchants, reagent vendors, poison vendors, flight masters, trainers and more. Additionally, the addon is smart enough to show only icons that might interest you, so a Mage doesn't have to sift through stable master and Rogue trainer icons to find icons of importance.

Credits

MANY thanks to Esamynn for the fantastic Astrolabe library that makes this addon possible. A lot of work has gone into the coding and data collection for Town Guard, but without the Astrolabe library, the payoff wouldn't have been worth the tremendous effort necessary to complete the addon.

Thanks to Keiroe of Alliance Kil'Jaeden for suggesting some of the earlier improvements, including reagent vendors and stable masters.

Thanks to Dan Donnan for helping me gather data - he volunteered his free time to explore and document 13 zones.

Thanks to Nebechenezer of Alliance Kil'Jaeden for helping me gather data - he volunteered his free time to explore and document several zones.

Yes showing in the minimap is annoying, it clutters it for way too long, maybe an on/off switch at least. Also is there some sort of file we can add coordinates to it and it shows in the map ? (To manually put our own markers ?)

  • Please switch over to the new version, entitled "WoWPlusPlus" here on Curse. Yes, I'm going to add an option to disable this... but I haven't yet. User waypoints are also coming in a later release.

oh and what I meant about filtering..you'll prolly see what I mean when I send the screenshot, but it wasn't just making the icons big, it was showing all of them it seemed, even the ones not near where I was in the town/city area. It was a massively wierd look. And btw, not using any minimap modifiers. I use Cartographer & Questhelper, but those are large map mods, I think. But not using anything wierd lol.

  • There may be some compatibility problem, though I can't imagine why... I'll try downloading the current versions of those addons to see what happens. Can you also send me a full list of your addons when you send the screenshot? Also, try disabling your other addons temporarily just to confirm that when WoW++ is the only addon, you still see the problem (even if you don't, that doesn't mean I won't try to fix the issue, but that would help me know where to look).

lol they weren't autohiding anything lol. I'll get a screenshot for you, next time I'm online (dang restarts).

And what I'll do is upload it to Sendspace.com and send you via pm the url for you to grab it (it'll prolly be easier that way on both of us), if that sounds good.

  • Yeah that would be great, thanks! I tried playing around with my resolution, and I couldn't get the icons to get unreasonably large... maybe I'll see what you mean when I get the screenshot. :)

  • A couple of things :

You shouldn't have an issue on a large resolution. Can you mail me a screenshot so I can see just how big your icons are? And what size is your resolution set to?

I don't think adding options menus for enabling/disabling the icons or changing their look is really worth the effort. You do know that they auto-hide when you're not pointing at the minimap, right?

Can you tell me more about filtering the icons? You say you don't want to see some icons in some areas... can you give some specific examples? I can't imagine what you mean.

Maybe some sort of configuration menu? Something where people can choose:

    Size
    Icon Look
Which Icons to Display (handy depending on what area you are going into... )
And the ability to turn off, w/o reloading UI.

I don't know, I know this is probably rather difficult...but my resolution is rather high lol. I have a new computer, with a largish widescreen monitor. I sorta enjoy pushin it to the ult (my fiance hates me though, cuz he's got an older comp with a regular monitor lol).

Anyways, enough of that :) Any thoughts on that? Would it be possible? And again, as always, thank you for your hard work, really appreciate not only the time you take on working on this, when you could be doing anything else then listening to us. And thank you for replying to us, as well. Helps imo, because it feels more like our replies are important to you, the creator.

Bah, I'm on pain meds atm lol..I'm just gonna wander away at this point lol. Laters :)

the icons are so big that they stack :( I have to remove it for now *cries* I want it too lol

  • Try zooming your minimap farther out or increasing your resolution. There's no way to for me to with this, I think... if I make them small, no one can make them out. If I make them big, they overlap. Ugh.

I really like the thought of this addon, but before i do download, would this cause problems or be incompatible with Cartographer?

If it is, gimme! lol Cart only shows after you've been there, and i'd rather know off the bat :p

  • There's no known issue with Cartographer, but if Cartographer is automatically adding icons to your minimap, you might have an overlap issue (one icon on top of the other).

    Some advantages over Cartographer:

-Knows where to find stuff before you ever visit places yourself.
-Auto-hides icons outside of towns and when you're not mouse-over the minimap.
-Filters icons by class and professions.
-Shows icons for some things that cartographer doesn't.
-It just works. No effort on your part to get it working.

    Disadvantages:

-Not configurable (can't add your own markers).
    -Limited to vendors and trainers.

swwweet, just what I wanted to know :) And I don't mind overlap on icons lol just didn't want the ui's going "wtf just happened" lol.

Thanks, i can't wait to use this! :)

If you're supplying your own icon files, make sure the pixel width and height is a power of 2 i.e. 16, 32, 64, 128 etc.. Without editing the code to scale them appropriately, you could just add transparent pixels as padding around the graphic. I too would like to see some newly designed icons though...

BTW, Astrolabe is now at build 49.

i want to use MUCH smaller icons but when i do this the icons become green squares and the game becomes unstable (crashs sometimes, crashs on exit always) could you fix this somehow?

wow... fast responce :-) thanks i'll try that.

  • You can make smaller icons if you want, but I don't see how they would be recognizable... the pixel count is already very limiting. Also, the width and height of any images you use have to be a power of 2. So your new images must be 1, 2, 4, 8 or 16 in size (width and height).

  • The size thing is partially correct. I personally don't like how large the TG minimap icons are by default so every release I edit the xml file and change the size of the minimap buttons from 16 to 12 .. Sure it's a power of 2, but it's not one that anyone's mentioned. I won't go into the boring math lesson but simply put a power of 2 and a multiple of 2 are one and the same, but that only applies to the number 2 to my knowledge.

    12 is not a power of 2. You're confusing X^2 with 2^X. The powers of 2 are as follows: 2^0 = 0, 2^1 = 2, 2^2 = 4, 2^3 = 8, 2^4 = 16, 2^5 = 32, 2^6 = 64, etc.

There is no integer value of X in 2^X where you can get 12.
