  • About Recap
  •

Recap records damage, healing, and other combat-related events in the area around the player.

  • When installing Recap, please first remove any existing Recap folder from your "World of Warcraft/Interface/AddOns" folder.
  • If experiencing problems with Recap, sometimes it is a bug, and sometimes your saved variables file may be damaged. It is always worth seeing whether removing the saved variables file fixes the problem. To do that, exit the game and go into your "World of Warcraft/WTF/Account/<account_name>/SavedVariables" folder and remove the "Recap.lua" and "Recap.lua.bak" files. Starting with version 4.25 there are also per-character saved variables files in the ".../<account_name>/<server_name>/<character_name>/SavedVariables" folders.
  • If you believe that Recap is properly installed and enabled, but you can't see the Recap main panel, try typing "/recap". If that doesn't work try typing "/recap centre" (or "/recap center").

QUICK START GUIDE: If you are new to Recap, or wish a quick overview, check out Recap_Quick_Start.rtf. This file is inside the Docs folder inside the Recap folder.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: If you wish more detailed information, check out readme_FAQ.txt for all of the features I have added or modified. For answers about earlier (and possibly obsolete) features of Recap prior to version 3.50, check out readme_332_FAQ.txt by Gello. These files are inside the Docs folder inside the Recap folder.

REPORTING A BUG: Contact me either via the wow.curse.com comments section for the addon; via private message on www.curse.com; or e-mail me at the address given in the file readme.txt inside the Docs folder inside the Recap folder. Please mention the version number, and double-check it by looking at the bottom of the Recap Options panel.

MAKING A SUGGESTION: Contact me in the same way as for reporting a bug.

New in 4.34

  • Bug fixes.
  • Five modules from Ace3 (r820) included. LibDataBroker (4.04) included.

New in 4.33

  • Recap now tracks an estimate of the amount absorbed during combat by the healer shield aura Protection of Ancient Kings that procs from the legendary mace Val'anyr.
  • Bug fixes.
  • Five modules from Ace3 (r820) included. LibDataBroker (4.04) included.

New in 4.32

  • Added option to pause Recap when inside battlegrounds.
  • Bug fixes.
  • Five modules from Ace3 (r820) included. LibDataBroker (4.04) included.

New in 4.31

  • Several adjustments aimed at improving how Recap determines the end of a fight.
  • Set End Fight Delay to a new default value, 2 seconds.
  • Bug fixes.
  • Five modules from Ace3 (r820) included. LibDataBroker (4.04) included.

New in 4.30

  • Updated for patch 3.2.
  • Bug fixes.
  • Five modules from Ace3 (r820) included. LibDataBroker (4.04) included.

New in 4.29

  • Modified logic for detecting end of fight. Fights should end sooner when unrelated combat is taking place nearby. End of fight will be triggered when nobody in the group is involved in giving or receiving damage or healing.
  • Added a button for renaming a stored Data Set.
  • Added a button to show recent events, and a button to show recent dispels and interrupts. These functions were formerly available, and continue to be available, as double-click and control+double-click on the totals line.
  • The analysis of recent deaths is now displayed in the recent events panel, rather than posted to the console.
  • For recent event displays where the incoming and outgoing events were identical except for colouring, the events are now displayed only once and are coloured as incoming.
  • Added two buttons to the recent event panel. The double up arrow will if possible scroll to the previous end of fight marker. The double down arrow will if possible scroll to the next end of fight marker.
  • Added a warning dialog if you have more than 40 Mbytes of saved Data Sets. Increased the warning for number of combatants from 1000 to 2000.
  • Per-character combatant data is now compressed on logout or reloadui, and uncompressed again upon re-entering the game. This seems to avoid the Blizzard "block too big" problem.
  • Added a setting on Options / Reports to post the two standard reports to the clipboard in tab-delimited format, suitable for pasting into a spreadsheet. The HTML and tab-delimited options are incompatible, and enabling one will turn the other off.
  • Added deaths to the Report Fights standard report on Options / Reports.
  • Changed synchronization to allow pausing while in sychronization, and to allow an ongoing synchronization to complete while paused. If the synchronization leader pauses or resumes Recap, all synchronization members will be asked to pause or resume.
  • Changed Manual Synchronization to request replies (as before), plus a summary from every member of the synchronization. Slower, but simpler and more complete.
  • Dispel casts and failures (currently for Dispel Magic, Mass Dispel, and Cleanse) are now recorded as recent events.
  • Updated WIM support, should work with WIM 3.1.1. Does not support WIM-to-WIM.
  • Bug fixes.
  • Five modules from Ace3 (r803) included. LibDataBroker (4.04) included.

New in 4.28

  • Simplified partial resistance numbers, added an average percentage partially resisted.
  • Bug fixes.
  • Five modules from Ace3 (r741) included. LibDataBroker (4.04) included.

New in 4.27

  • Updated for patch 3.1.
  • LibDataBroker support is now an option, off by default. Made a few improvements to LibDataBroker support.
  • Added interrupts to Recent Events. The existing control+click mechanisms for Recent Events now shows both dispels and interrupts.
  • Increased the maximum number of Recent Events stored to 40,000.
  • Added a count of the number of hits from each source to the Deaths posts.
  • Now storing multiple spell IDs for spells and abilities.
  • Now ignoring summon events that would create Fishing Bobber and Basic Campfire pets.
  • Bug fixes.
  • Five modules from Ace3 (r803) included. LibDataBroker (4.04) included.

New in 4.26

  • Bug fixes.
  • Six modules from Ace3 (r741) included. LibDataBroker (4.04) included.

New in 4.25

  • Death knight ghouls summoned using Raise Dead, which have multiple names, will be merged into one 'Ghoul Minion' (when Merge Pets is on). The new ghouls that appear every time you mount then dismount will not be recognized as having been summoned using Raise Dead, so this new feature only partly addresses the issue. This feature does not adjust existing data.
  • Added option (default off) to merge all pets for a combatant into one 'Pet' (when Merge Pets is on). Use with caution, as this will lump the data for all types of pet together, including pets, vehicles, totems, traps, and controlled mobs. This feature does not adjust existing data.
  • Added a new live minimized number, the percentage of your damage done by your pet(s). This percentage is currently only available as a live minimized number, not in any other display. Modified RecapFu and TitanRecap to support the new live number.
  • Added a new column to the main fights panel to show Dispels, the number of times that a combatant dispelled an effect. This number includes both desirable dispels and undesirable dispels (such as accidentally breaking crowd control).
  • Added a new Deaths button to the main fights panel next to the Reset button. The Deaths button posts a report on the last few sources of damage for every group player who has recently died. It can assist in answering questions such as "how many people died to the fire wall?" at Sartharion. To use this feature you need to have the Recent Data Mode option enabled.
  • Chat posts for damage now include dps, and vice versa; similarly for healing.
  • Added a Delete All button on the Options / Data Sets tab.
  • Added the ability on the Options / Data Sets tab to select a range of data sets for deletion by clicking on one data set and shift+clicking on a second data set.
  • Redesigned options and combatants so that they are stored separately for each character. A data loss for one character (e.g. as a result of a "block too big" error on login) should not affect other characters, and should not affect stored Data Sets. Added code to detect possible damage to a "per character" data file and put up a warning dialog. The dialog has a button to Restore Character Settings from a backup copy (also available as a slash command, "/recap restore").
  • Redesigned the global settings feature, and added a button to copy global settings to a character. If you need to set up a number of characters with the same settings, do the following: enable Use Global Settings; set the global settings up the way you want; log on to each character for which you want to use these settings and click the Copy Global To Character button; and finally disable Use Global Settings. Note that window positioning is always separately adjustable for each character.
  • Modified format for saved data sets to reduce string lengths.
  • Removed the option to automatically save and reset on logout.
  • Bug fixes.
  • Six modules from Ace3 (r741) included. LibDataBroker (4.04) included.

For descriptions of what was new for versions 3.50 through 3.77, and for versions 4.00 through 4.24, see the file readme.txt.

Version 3.50 was initially uploaded by Hawksy on 2006-December-20

Recap up to version 3.32 was developed by Gello.

  • 4.34 still hasn't resolved the DC issue. Takes forever to load into the game still. Going back to 4.30 again.

Try to delete/rename the /wtf/config.wtf file, to force the game to load into default graphic/ui settings.
That fixed a dc-on-login problem for me (after trying everything else, including disabling all other addons, resetting any other options other than Recap's).
Still not entirely sure what was causing those dc's for me.

The new version 4.34 has been uploaded, and should be available for download soon.

This version makes some adjustments and corrects a few errors.

4.33 is still "unpausing" on its own. Specifically, these steps:

    - pause monitoring
    - fight and die (may need to be inside an instance? dunno)
    - release spirit
    - Recap will reactivate itself once you appear at the graveyard as a ghost

    Farmbuyer:

I tried this, from both inside and outside an instance, and do not get the reactivation.

Can you give me some more details? Settings? Exactly where does this happen?

    Farmbuyer:

Thanks for the report. With the setting "Pause Inside Battlegrounds" checked and "Pause Outside Instances" unchecked, there is a error that resumes Recap when you leave a non-battleground instance. I will fix it.

The new version 4.33 has been uploaded, and should be available for download soon.

This version corrects the errors recently reported.

This version also adds to the healing column an estimate of the actual absorption due to the shielding created by the legendary mace Val'anyr, in a manner similar to Power Word: Shield, Divine Aegis, and Sacred Shield.

Whenever I try to create a detailed report for export it locks up and crashes WoW. A summary report seems to work just fine.

    injury:

Does this happen on all of your toons, or just on one? Which version of Recap are you running? What are the three settings below the Report Fights button? Any other special circumstances?

Could you if possible zip up a copy of the Recap.lua saved variables file and email it to my address in the readme.txt file, along with the name of the toon for which it breaks.

If you have saved data sets the zip file will probably be too large. You can temporarily remove the data sets by logging out, saving a copy of the Recap.lua saved variables file, logging in, deleting all saved data sets, logging out, zipping up the much smaller Recap.lua saved variables file, and finally replacing the small file with the larger file that you saved earlier.

Alright, this seems to happen on my DK and not on my Druid and Warlock.

    Running 4.32.

Was giving me the same behavior with no boxes checked under the reports button, or just the HTML format button.

I just tested and attempted it even after doing a reset (all) just to make sure it wasn't the amount of fights I might have had in it, and it did it on the DK still.

    Email of lua file forthcoming

    injury:

Many thanks for the report and the zipped data file.

I think that what is happening is that for your DK there are more data in your personal details than can fit into Recap's clipboard. Most of the personal detail lines are individually named ghoul abilities.

On my machine your file doesn't cause problems, but it might cause problems on other machines.

I'll fix Recap to stop just before it fills the clipboard, in case that's the difficulty.

There's a second possibility. Posting to the clipboard is, for some reason, incredibly slow. It might be that it is simply taking so long on your machine that the WoW client or the WoW server decides that your machine has gone bye-bye and forcibly disconnects you.

Recap's code is probably not the problem as such. Every time you open the main panel, Recap has done much more computing than there is involved in posting one line to the clipboard. There's something about posting to a clipboard in Blizzard's addon programming language that is extremely slow.

I will look at the Recap code and see if there is any way of speeding that clipboard code up. I will also investigate whether I can break long posts to the clipboard into smaller pieces so that Recap is 'away' for several shorter chunks of time rather than for one single long chunk of time.

In the meantime, either reset a ton of those ghoul records in your DK's personal details (good luck, there are over 1100 lines for the individually named ghoul abilities); or reset your DK's personal details entirely.

Doing a Reset All Fights does not reset your DK's personal details. Switch to the personal details view on the main panel (top bar is blue). The Reset button there will reset the personal details. You can also bind a key to the Reset Personal Details function (see WoW's Key Bindings).

If you want to reset the ghoul abilities individually, right-click on the ability and there will be a popup menu (with one entry) allowing you to Reset Effect.

    Everyone:

I'm testing fixes for the problems reported earlier.

    coani:

Investigation of spell tooltips seems to indicate that only the spells your toon knows will get tooltips, so unless I'm missing something, it wouldn't tell you anything new.

Hawksy: btw one small request: would it be possible to show in tooltip the actual tooltip for the spells when you mouseover the spellIDs in detail pane, or display it if shift-clicking on the spellID?
Sometimes find myself wondering what certain specific spells do, and would be nice to see quickly ingame instead of having to hop over to wowhead.

You appear to be running a rather old version of Recap (4.10). Exit WoW, delete the old Recap folder, download version 4.31 manually from higher up this page, and install version 4.31.

    Hi Hawksy,

I have been having the same problem with Recap not detecting the end of fights. I have been using the pause button as mentioned with no real issue. (haven't tried the update yet, i'll give it a go when I get home).

Would this problem be to do with the fact that overhealing now appears in the combat log? A warlocks Fel Armor ticks would not have appeared when the lock was at full health, but now they will appear as overhealing.

Either way, fantastic addon - been using it for ages.

    Rarebeast:

You are correct, part of the problem with Recap not detecting end of fight was to do with auras like Fel Armor creating combat log events even when the warlock was at full health. There was more involved than just that, but that was indeed one factor.
