The Traveller's Reference: A DataBroker Plugin

The Traveller's Reference is an easy to use guide to provide you with information about the current zone you're in, and pointers to other places you could go. This mod is also a DataBroker plugin, which means there are many ways in which you can display this information (see the section below for DataBroker information).

Here's the bulleted feature list.

The information display (see screenshot):

- Shows the zone you're currently in and the level-range of that zone is shown.
- The display style can be toggled between two modes via alt + click.
- Long display: Shows the zone, sub-zone in brackets, then the level-range.
- Short display: Shows the sub-zone if present, otherwise the zone, then the level-range.
- Shift + clicking the display will toggle showing the range.
- Control + clicking the display toggles plugin-dragging mode*.
- Clicking the display opens/closes the World Map.

  • When in this mode, the tooltip is mode small and most click based operations are disabled. This is in order to make the plugin easier to drag into position.

The tooltip (see screenshot):

- A list of neighbouring zones (zones that border the one you're currently in).
- A list of instances within your level-range.
- A list of zones within your level-range.
- The level-ranges are colour-coded so they can be easily recognised at a glance.
- Holding shift makes the tooltip small, for ease of movement.

What is DataBroker?

DataBroker is part of a system that's similar to FuBar and its plugins, what you have here is a plugin but you'll also need something to display the output of the plugin. You have many options for this, and I've listed a number of them below for your perusal, just pick the one that interests you the most.

  • I'm using Fortress, and I can't seem to move your mod at all from the middle of the screen. Any ideas?

Edit: Hooked another mod to it and was able to move it.

  • Thanks!!

Edit: Wanted to add, I could move it 'if' I could get it. Tooltip covered it up.

  • The tooltip was covering it? I have that problem myself with some DataBroker plugins, this is why I was glad of the latest Fortress release which insanely cascades new plugins over the screen. Even still though it occasionally bloody misplaces the tooltip and makes plugins impossible to move. This is a plague that affects all mods with big tooltips.

However, since this is my mod we're talking about here I think I can do something, the situation isn't hopeless. What I'll probably do is make it so that if Shift is being held the tooltip won't show.

That should provide a decent (if somewhat hackish) solution!

  • Whether The Traveller's Reference will exist in Wrath of the Lich King is a tricky thing to call.

The mod already runs beautifully in Wrath (this has been tested) but the problem is that none of the zone info is in there yet. The Traveller's Reference pulls on a library to get all of its information; LibTourist-3.0. If that library is updated for Wrath of the Lich King by the original author or anyone else then all I'll have to do is roll in the update to have everything working.

If it isn't updated... well, that leaves this plugin in a sticky situation. I might take a stab at maintaining the library myself if no one else does but that's going to be really, really hard, so I don't relish the thought.

All I can say at this point is that we'll have to see what the future holds. I'm hoping for the best, though.

  • Uber_Bwnage, the version of Titan Panel that was released yesterday supports Data Broker plugins. They are listed in the right-click menu under Plugins. That menu also has the Titan-standard Show Icon, Show Name, and Show Colored Text option that work if they were coded into the DB plugin. If the plugin is coded as a launcher, Titan also allows you to make it a right-side icon instead of a left-side button. The Titan Options menu gives you the choice of appending LDB to the plugin name in the list. I've tested A Traveller's Reference, it works just fine in Titan, and I'm using it. And unlike VagrantWolf, I do endorse the use of Titan for Data Broker plugins! :)

  • Is there a way to make this for titan panel instead? :D

  • Bwn: This is a DataBroker plugin, so it's already for TitanPanel (in a way). TitanPanel already has support for DataBroker plugins in its latest version, just make sure you have the latest version (from titanpanel.org).

Once you have the latest version (see if the Titan folder has a file named LDBToTitan.lua in it, that'll tell you whether you do or not), the plugin will show up on TitanPanel just as any normal Titan plugin would.

I'll say now though for the record that I don't endorse Titan and that I recommend the user use one of the mods designed for DataBroker plugins (such as Fortress, which can be found at wowinterface.com), but at the end of the day it's down to each person to decide the mod they want to use to handle their plugins. It's not my decision to make, so I won't withhold that information.

  • On mouseover using Fortress....I posted it over to that mod on WowInterface too.

  • Fred: That was totally my fault, sorry.

The thing is, when LibTourist is unable to find an appropriate set of zones, it returns a string instead of the zone-table that it usually returns. I thought that by using an IsInInstance() check for the border-zones table I'd get rid of most errrs, apparently that wasn't the case. What I should have been doing is putting each block in an if type(zones_table) == "table" then -- end.

Count on a bugfix release being up soon! I already have my local version fixed to avoid this, I just have to run some tests to make sure I didn't break anything else in the process.
