  • About OOC ((Out Of Character))
  •

I saw a similar add on that pops up a message box with a few functions, but me personally, as a RPer i wanted something simple and instant.

So I came up with this mod.

It has one function and no settings. No options. All it has is a slash command /ooc

How does it work? Simple.

Install the addon, load WoW up, and then type this in your chat box:

/ooc Just testing a mod out.

What gets printed is:

(( Just testing a mod out. ))

That's it.
Converts anything you type after the /ooc into double bracketted RP OOC text. For those that don't Role Play, don't worry, click your back button now. ;-)

It will only do this in the /say channel. Since that's where you do most of your RP, that's all that I feel is really needed.

Enjoy.

Is there a way to make this work on the current chat mode I'm in? I don't use brackets in /say ever.

Very strange to hear that you don't use the brackets in /say ever.

What channel do you use the brackets?

I'm not mod savvy so I don't know how to do that. Using brackets in /say breaks immersion too much, we save that for party or tells.

Totally disagree (read my points about it in a previous post below)

We use /party for OOC. No need for brackets in /party as /party is a totally ooc channel for us.

/say is all IC unless bracketted.

If you wanna change the mod, open it up in notepad and change SAY to PARTY :)

I come from the ye-old days of D&D. Table Top RP where you have to be able to be good enough to flip in and out of IC and OOC.

Many of us old school D&Ders have taken that ability in to many games. We're able to:

/say My friend, I must bid you well for the Queen has summoned me for an important assignment (( got to go, wife wants me immediately! )).

In a simple statement like above, we keep the immersion of the RP and immediately not only know why our friend has to go, but we get a laugh too.

It's not that hard to follow... is it?

Thats fine for you to disagree, lots of people do things differently. On our server, we tend to stay in character in say, guild, party and whisper thats how we do things. Are there exceptions to the rule, sure. Thats not to hard to follow either.. right?

    Thanks though.

If you do that, then this mod really isn't needed by your server.

But if you wanna edit it, use notepad and change "SAY" to whatever you need, example, "YELL" "PARTY" "GUILD"

Probably is, but I dunno how to figure that out so it's just default to /say

If you figure out how to read what channel you're on, post it and I'll update it to do so.

All i need is for someone to tell me how to find out what channel something sent on, cause I can't seem to figure that part out.

If I know that, then I can make a if else then do statement which will send on the same channel.

  • ... I don't get it... do people on Role Playing servers say everything between brackets?

If you don't get it, it's ok. :)

It's for RPers to get. :)

The answer to your question is no. Not everything. Anything out of character is.

Most of the true RPers understand the Double Bracket system.

It's been around for donkeys years, and in most RP games, not limited to WoW.

    http://www.reddragoninn.com/rules.html is an example.

Most RPers speak as their Character, in Character. But if for example there is something urgent that popped up, and you have to shoot offline, instead of the person RPing it in character, they could simply do a (( Guys, I gotta shoot off, my roast is burning! ))

People would then automatically know that it was completely out of character, and no one would RP to it. It would just be known that it has nothing to do with any RPing that was going on. That is the difference between the Out of Character ((OOC)) and In Character (IC) chatting.

Some RP realms on WoW even hate the double bracket system and would prefer total in character conversations, but hate to break it to them guys, the OOC bracket system has been around long before WoW and established in many games prior to WoW and definitely has its place in the RP environment. Hope that clears it up for you iam4everkool. :)

Another example is its use (the double brackets) for new comers to RP.

Someone may be new and come into the RP event and not understand completely what the hell is going on and could simply say: ((Guys, I'm lost. Can you fill me in on what's going on please)).

So in one simple OOC sentence, everyone in the RP Event understand that this person needs to be brought up to speed on what is going on, that way, they can then contribute to the RP instead of standing there confused and not being of any real help. It's a tool, that if used wisely, is a great advantage to keep the flow of an RP event.

Or someone may be purposely speaking strangely and almost unintelligible due to some RP thing that may have happened. Others who join the event may not realise what has happened. This character could then say ((My character is speaking this way on purpose, this is what happened to her))

That player can then bring the others up to speed via OOC.

For those who use My RolePlay (MRP): http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/my-role-play.aspx

    File Replacements:
    Tooltip with Spec: http://www.elder-rise.com/MyRolePlayTooltip_Spec.zip

Tooltip with Spec but no Guild Rank shown (shows "Member" instead):
    http://www.elder-rise.com/MyRolePlayTooltip.zip

I'm a big fan of MRP but I also want to know what Spec people are. Some people have children and don't want to see some of the terrible Guild Ranks some Guilds have, so the second file will simply say 'Member' and not list those.
