What is GearScore?

  • GearScore is an addon for World of Warcraft that allows you to quickly and easily judge a player's level of Gear. Simply mouse-over any player in the game and their GearScore will appear in their tooltip. No need to visit the armory!
  • GearScore represents the maximum potential for a player to perform. The higher your GearScore the higher your potential to heal/dps/tank. Remember however, that is is up to the player's skill to match that potential.
  • Watch a Video of GearScore 3.0 in action!: http:www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FYRHwswPNk
  • GearScoreAddon Official Website: http:www.GearScoreAddon.com
  • (Get the latest news, updates, info about upcoming features and of course download the newest beta versions!)
  • For a lite version with minimal system impact check out GearScoreLite

How does GearScore Work?

  • Whenever you mouseover a player in the game GearScore will scan that player's gear and calculate a score. The scores are based on how blizzard assigns stats to an item and take in account ilevel, rarity, and equipment slot location. Scores scale smoothly as player's level up and obtain new items.
  • Everyone who uses the mod shares information about the scores they scan allowing you to search for player's you've never even seen before.

What are GearScore's features?

  • Instant Score Calculation - Scores are calculated instantly whenever you mouse over any player in the game as long as they are within inspect range.
  • In-Game Armory - Allows you to view any player in your database's equipment and GearScore
  • Database - Scores are remembered so that the next time you see a player you will know their score, even if they are in a completely different zone. The database feature also allows you to manually look up a player anytime you want 1000 faster then the armory.
  • Communication - Whenever you scan a GearScore of a player you also share that score with everyone in your party or raid and everyone in your guild. This is very similar to how Gatherer works in sharing resource nodes.
  • Average iLevel - With this feature you can also see the average item level of a player. This is perfect for such things as Ulduar vehicle assignment and upcoming changes to drakes in 3.2
  • Master Loot Upgrade Mode - This mode is an excellent way to assist your raid in increasing their overall level of gear as quick as possible. Whenever you mouse over an item the tooltip will show how much of an upgrade in GearScore that item is for each person in your raid that can equip that item. Prefect for loot-council type raiding guilds and also excellent for leveling characters in helping to choose which item to pick from quest rewards.
  • Reporting - GearScore also allows you to post the GearScores of player's in your raid/party into chat. GearScore even has integration with Recount to allow you to see a graphical representation of your raid's GearScores.

How does GearScore compare to 'ratings' websites?

  • I started working on GearScore before I even knew of WoW-heroes or IMBA. I'm not sure how IMBA calculates its scores but WoW-Heroes scores are always about 1/2 of GearScore's scores. Many people ask me to simply use the same formula these websites do. There are a few problems with that. The first is I don't wish to steal a formula from a website and brand it as inline with their scores. Those sites make $$ from advertisers and if I steal their work I'm also stealing their money. Another problem with this is that the armory gives these websites more information then my mod, therefore they are able to take into account additional factors when calculating scores.

ZOMFG!!! GEAR DOESN'T EQUAL SKILL!!?

  • I agree completely. However many players like to PUG. When you pug your forced to invite people you don't know. A really sucky player with high GearScore will do more dps then a really sucky player with low GearScore. PUGs dont have time for guild-type interviews each time they invite a player to their raid. PUGs usually have no idea of the skill a player has. So PUGs are forced to use the only factor they know, your quality of Gear. If you don't like this style of gaming I recommend joining a guild where nobody cares what your GearScore is.
  • That being said, GearScore 3.x has new features that allow players to make smarter choices instead of simply dismissing you if your not at a bare minimum. The color chart for instances is colored from red to green to represent the difficulty a player might have in a particular instance. The in-game-armory function lets you see if a person's GearScore is low because perhaps they are in PvP gear or wearing a Lance and overall helps you make a more informed decision.

How can I contribute?

  • Feedback - I'm constantly looking for ways to improve my mod. So if you have any comments or suggestions please leave them here. If you don't have a curse account you can leave feedback on the official website http://www.GearScoreAddon.com where you do not need to register to leave comments on the feedback page.
  • Download the beta version - and help me test upcoming and new features. Beta versions may contain bugs and I need help to find these.
  • Donate - Your donations help pay for this website and allow me to work less and keep programing on GearScore. As a bonus feature if you donate make sure to give me the name and server of your character and in the next update your character will have the special line "Official Supporter of GearScore" added to the tooltip of your player whenever somebody mouses over you.

  • I finally had to cave in and download this addon i hate so much. When i try to get into heroics to farm emblems as a tank i always hear "what's your GS?" I always replied the same thing "Hell if i know i dont use that addon." And i would either get dropped from the group or not invited. Apparently 34k unbuffed health as a warrior tank isnt enough convincing, i have to have some random numbers associated with it. All i see in the LFG channel is "LFM H (insert daily) 4500 GS or better only." "LFM Naxx 10, 5k + GS minimum!"

This is stupid, i remember tanking these same dungeons with 22k unbuffed health.

For some reason on the database the buttons along the bottom are covered up by the character listing section that should stop above them. Only the bottom edge of the buttons is visible.

You have some Font-changing addon. In the future I plan to move these buttons into tabs to fix the issue.

The only thing that exceeds in what's killing WoW compared to this addon is Arena.

This thing should have never been made. Why? Cause now you see people broadcasting in trade that they are looking for a certain GS for NORMAL DUNGEONS! Not even Heroics.

Is it possible somehow to show average item level and maybe resilience in tool tip as well :) that would be pure awesome

  • MrSmeagol said

my bad, there already exists option to show average item level in tooltip :)
Resilience is still a nice idea though, because someone can have a high score purely based on pvp items, and then that just isn't the same gear as somone with same gear-score in pve gear.

Oh i didn't know there was a beta :) but now i found it and I'm loving all the new features, as buggy as they are hehe. And resilience shows nicely in Stat List but it would be even more awesome to have an option to show it in tooltip, i guess that should be less then 10 minutes of coding for you, correct me if I'm wrong :)
Anyways I'm loving the progress you're making with addon and can't wait for stable release ^^

a couple of bug reports for beta: dragging the frame doesn't work all the time, you have to click in specific places. Raiding experience works only occasionally. Refreshing when switching targets while addon is open doesn't always work. Just my 2¢

Nah, it was in the tooltip in teh iteration before this. It would show how much the Resilience is dragging yoru score back. But that was when I used it as a simple % instead of using the GearScore that counts gems/enchants and such. Thats why you'll get an error when you mouse over that bar, its trying to load a tooltip that doesn't exist anymore =P

The problem of adding it to mouseover tooltip has to do with gem information missing from itemlinks when you inspect a player. THey are added at a random time later and its really bugg, BLIZZ PLEASE FIX IT!

I agree with most people that choosing party members by gearscore alone is elitist nonsense. It say little about a players skill since many of the high scored items are easy to come by now.

I really like the addon though. It lets me gauge my own progress as I gear up, in a relative fashion.

Im glad this addon exists.. It makes me select my groups better. Any group who uses this addon to select its groupmember, I want nothing to do with.

But if you can make a addon which rates a persons skill, then I would be interested...

well you can kinda use this addon in combination with recount to do that :) If guy with lower gearscore had higher dps then he is more skilled ;)

Exactly. If somebody with 6000 GearScore is doing the same dps as somebody with 3000 GearScore you know without a doubt that the 6000gs player Sucks.

However, the 6k GS toon is in the raid, the 3k guy is sidelined.

How does GearScore change any of this? You going to take the guy in full blues to your raid instead of the guy in full purples?

Really the guy with 3000 GS should be looking to run lower raids instead of expecting a free ride to the top.

  • To everyone trying to complain about how gearscore ruins it, no. It doesn't. Its the player community.
When a community of elitist douchebags boil down the gameplay this is what you get.
You all boil down all gameplay into cookie cutter gear, pigeon holing specs, what do you have left? You have nothing to do with skill as someone with better gear will almost always win.

So now all you get is a gearscore , a marker to mark your place in the content grind.

The mod is just the epitome of what the player community is, instead of playing for fun, you boil it down. You play the cheapest, most effective way to get yourself a win. Instead of playing games that challenge you and the fun is in the challenge, you get cookie cutter dungeon grinds for TOKENS.

You really shouldn't blame it on the community, it's blizzard who designed the game that way. Community just adapted to an existing situation. Blizzard is the one that added item levels to begin with.
I'm just saying you should realize that it's not community that's corrupt, it's a direct product of how the game is designed. It's only logical for people to want to group with people with better gear since it directly increases their chance of advancing in the game. Think about it, it's perfectly logical! :)
You gotta address root causes before blaming it on anyone in particular, in your case community, because community here is just a symptom ;)

I agree, alot of it is how blizzard has molded the game. They have focused heavily on ease of access to the casual player. Then they offer rewards that are easier to obtain as long as you keep new players out. These 2 effects create a demand for the fastest instance/raid runs as possible with as few wipes as possible. GearScore was never a "Problem" until patch 3.3 when it was an emblem freebee. Blizzard's plan was to hope high level players went back with newbs and everyone would win. It clearly back fired and high geared players only want to run for 15 mins. They are clearly bored of the content and don't want to run Heroic Nexus dying a ton because some tank is a new player.
