  • About Nickname Notifier
  •

Future enhancements to Nickname Notifier will appear as part of the new WoW++ project.

Summary

When the names or nicknames of any of your characters are mentioned in chat, Nickname Notifier makes a sound and posts the message temporarily near the top of your screen. No more missed messages when you're busy with combat or other attention-grabbing activities!

Instructions

Just install and forget. Nickname Notifier will remind you to set a nickname for each of your characters the first time you log them in after installation, but will otherwise require none of your attention to work correctly.

If you decide to set your nickname at a later time or change the current nickname setting for the character you're currently playing, just use /nickname <nickname> again. Enjoy!

  • Kheldul : That's very strange, as it's my understanding that addons can't see messages on channels you're not a member of. But maybe I'm wrong? About your second comment, I'm not sure I understand... was there something changed that you didn't like? The addon still splashes the message onto your screen, at least as far as I know.

Jwest : No matter which character you are on, Nickname Notifier watches for all the names and nicknames of all of your characters. So if you've got 8 characters on a server each with a nickname set, then the addon is watching for all 16 strings.

Love the AddOn, but there are two tweaks I'd like to see made.

    - I'd like to be able to watch for multiple nicknames. As near as I can tell, right now I can only watch for one at a time.

    - Preserving the original case of the message splashed onto the screen would be a nice touch. :)

    Thanks!

    This mod is quite nice.

One thing I noticed was that it will pattern match on common channels that I am not on. For instance, I'm not on the Trade channel, but if someone posts something that uses the short form (nickname) of my toon then it'll broadcast that to my screen. I'm not sure how that's happening but it is.

I don't have any chat monitors or filters or organizers. The closest is the latest and greatest ctraid.

Let me add another voice to the 'multiple nicknames' request.

As to your rationale for not adding it, then the simple /nickname command gets a whole lot more complicated for users. :\ - that's just silly. It's trivial to type
    "/nickname nickname1"
    "/nickname nickname2"
    repeat as desired

That said, I can see where YOU would have to do some more work on it. :)

  • Just a reminder, this addon will be part of WoW++ from now on. :) Now some replies to your comments :

Argh! Okay okay, multiple nicknames next release. I'll have to add a /removenickname command, though. I see some UI coming in the future...

Jwest, I dropped the 'splash' because I'm planning on integrating this into WoW++, and I can see where not all users would want the message splash. I could add an option, but I can't figure out where to put it... if I find a place in the options dialog for it, I'll put that functionality back in.

Kheldul, that's odd and certainly not intentional. Let me look into that.

  • Pythros: I don't think I'm going to add that, because then the simple /nickname command gets a whole lot more complicated for users. :\

Any possibility to have it store multiple nicknames for one character instead of just one? Due to sometimes I (Pythros) will get called either Py(or repeated several times as "pypypypy..."), Pyt, or Pyth in chats. They are all very common so it's hard to use only one form. Shouldn't be that too hard... I just do
