MusicPlayer

An ingame, fully functional mp3player with alot of extra features to enhance your exeperience in Azeroth.

About

The whole idea of creating a wow-mp3player started when I died for the umpteenth time while being in the background, changing my music etc. I normally play in fullscreen mode, which means I have to alt-tab forth and back between WoW and Winamp. In addition, Winamp do take more CPU than a simple WoW addon.

MusicPlayer is what I came up with. MusicPlayer started as a bad, not good at all… thing, but today it is one of the best WoW-mp3 players out there.

Features

  • Chat notify - Sends MusicPlayer's messages to your chatbox.
  • Search box - Search through your playlist.
  • Fubar / Titan Plugins - Self explaining.
  • Playlist Generator - handles unlimited numbers! (or, almost.)
  • Keybindings - Bindings for next / prev, volume, etc.
  • Shuffle and "at the end" functionality - self explaining.
  • Playlist Formatting - Format your playlist to your likings! (Also includes sorting.)
  • Options window - Easy and well designed options window, with options to custom everything! From colors to playlist formatting.
  • Minimap icon - Minimap icon with dropdown menu.
  • Ingame Help - Description for every option and every part of MusicPlayer.
  • Slash Commands - See ingame help for a complete list.
  • Announcer - Sends a message to your specific channel with your currently playing song's title, artist and genre!
  • Item links - Shows basic information about a song in an item tooltip! (Shift Click to send it! - Can only be sent to other people with MusicPlayer.)

Getting Started

I will explain how you get started here. After you have installed MusicPlayer (read how to install the addon properly at the “How to install” page), you have to do 3 easy steps.

1. Put your mp3s (copy them, or move them) into the Music folder, found inside MusicPlayer's folder.
Example: "WoW" \ Interface \ addons \ MusicPlayer \ Music \ mp3filename.mp3
2. Use the PlaylistMaker.exe included in the .zip. An interface will appear, check that all of your mp3s show up in the list. Click "Generate" if they all appear in the list.
3. Exit WoW (or start WoW, if WoW is not running) and log back in again.

See Troubleshooting for more information.

FAQs - Out of game

Q - Why do i have to put my mp3s in the Music folder?

A - WoW cannot read (nor activate) files that is not in WoW's directory. Ask Blizzard why this is, not me.

Q - The playlist maker says i need something like .Net Framework 2.0. What is that and where do i get it?

A - .Net Framework is, obviously, a framework for applications. You can get it from Microsoft. (Link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0856EACB-4362-4B0D-8EDD-AAB15C5E04F5)

Q - Why can't I add .wav or other filetypes to MusicPlayer?

A - Simply because the API function PlayMusic does not support it. I hope Blizzard will add more than just the mp3 format soon.

FAQs - Ingame

Q - While I travel, WoW's background music seems to play along with my music.

A - This cannot be fixed. Blizzard made Musical moments, but did not give priority to the PlayMusic function, which is the function MusicPlayer use to connect to the .mp3s.

Q - I've added the songs, and they show up correctly in the playlist, but theres no sound at all when i play them!

A - Please be sure that both Master- and Music volume are at decent value. Then check if your headset / speakers are plugged in and is turned on. If that doesn’t work, have you tested relogging?

Q - When alt-tabbed, MusicPlayer doesn't seem to update correctly! Why is this?

A - alt-tabbing out of the game for extended periods with the audio still playing in the background will cause MusicPlayer to continue playing a song, but the timer doesn't tick because the game is minimized.

Q - My question is not listed here! What do i do?

A - Post a comment on this site, and I'll answer you there.

Troubleshooting

Having problems? Read what to do here:

  • PlaylistMaker Problems?
Please be sure that you have installed .NET Framework 2.0. (see FAQs for a download-link.) If you still got problems, try use the regsvr script included. If that doesn’t work either, please post here, with the following information included; your error-message and your version of MusicPlayer.
  • No sound?
Check the sound options and make sure that both the master- and the music volume is at decent value. The enable music checkbox do not have to be checked, as MusicPlayer automaticly checks it for you. If theres still no sound, take a look at your speaker’s volume. Is it at decent value? If theres still no sound, but everything seems ok, have you tried to relogg? (completely exit WoW)
  • Lua error?
Please post the complete error (debug version is more than welcome too) and your version of MusicPlayer. If you don’t know which version you have, open the options window and look for it there.

If you want to report a full error-report, Please post as follows;

  • Version of MusicPlayer
  • Lua error
  • When it happened (What did you do when it happened?)
    • Please add any thoughts you got.
  • Your Configuration (only if you belive it has something to do with it)

While ingame, press escape -> Sound and voice options -> Increase the "Sound Channels" option to max.

It might also be a good idea to disable other sounds effects like ambient etc.

    type this into the chat (case sensitive);

    /run MusicPlayer_Button_SetPosition(number)

change the text that says "number" into a number (from 1 to 360). Then just move it where you want as soon as it appears somewhere click-able.

    example;
    /run MusicPlayer_Button_SetPosition(180)

Check if there is a MusicPlayer_GeneratedPlaylist.lua file in the MusicPlayer. If there is no such file, you haven't generated a playlist.

  • some songs i added say unknown title and artiest and the file has the artiest name and stuff is there a way i can edit on the player itself or what?

You will need to update the file, not MusicPlayer. MusicPlayer has only one way to gather information about a song, and that is through the tags within the file. A filename doesn't give much information other than the name in which to use in order to play that file.
There is no way I can get MusicPlayer to understand if the first word but not the second is the title and the fourth word is the artist while the fifth word should be ignored because it was just a joke put in by the owner of the file.

What you must do in order to get it displayed right, is to right click the file (not ingame, but in the folder on your computer) and select properties. Go to the "Summary" tab and press the "Advanced >>" button. You then fill in the artist and title etc into the fields.

  • Hey dude, your music player cuts out when I'm fighting creatures or warping to other places. I hope you will look into fixing that problem in the future upgrades as I love this music player and love it's settings, but am anxious for this problem to be resolved. I thank you for your time and consideration in my comment, take care.

Increase the sound channels option (press esc -> Sound and voice options -> Sound channels slider -> slide it to max).

askrym, I deleted your message because it was a bit long. However, your error is because of a faulty playlist. lua, the scripting language wow uses, is a bit sensitive when it comes to characters used. Many times, letters like Ð Ï ǽ etc bugs the playlist. Also the qoutes character (") bugs it too, because " is used to define a text string, so the lua engine is fooled to believe there is an unfinished string somewhere. There are a lot of other causes and what not, and I can write page up and page down about it, but what you should do about it is more important.

Try to use the other playlist generator ("playlist.creator"). If it does not help, try to remove and / or rewrite (to english letters) the tags of the songs that have strange characters (as mentioned above).

  • Hey I love this addon and ty; one thing I suggest though is making an anchor menu in the playlist from inside the game. Useful options could be to delete/remove certain songs.

One of the mainthings I've tried to do with MusicPlayer is to keep the player itself a bit compact. The anchor option is meant to be configured only once. As for the delete / remove suggestion, just delete the file and run the playlist generator again.

  • i have it installed and i have put my music in the thing and ran the .exe but i dont see it in the game. how do i open it?

The files need to be in the Music folder. / interface / addons / MusicPlayer / Music / put them here. Also, the files need to be mp3 files. When you run the exe, it will show you if it found any files or not by displaying them in the list. Once you've run the exe, check if a file named "MusicPlayer_GeneratedPlaylist.lua" has appeared in the MusicPlayer folder. If it is there, then you can log in, or if you've already logged in, you must completely exit wow (so that the process "wow.exe" is not running on your computer anymore) and then start wow again and log back in. If there is not a file called "MusicPlayer_GeneratedPlaylist.lua" in the MusicPlayer folder, then you haven't done one or more of the points above correctly, and thus, you have to try again.

Any plans for a Mac-compatible version?

The playlistcreator (archive found in the MusicPlayer folder) should include a .py (a python file), which should be usable for mac users.

I just installed this onto a new computer and after configuring everything else to work properly, I noticed that MusicPlayer wasn't going onto my Ninjapanel. I do have both Fubar2Broker and the Fubar(dummy) installed and I have another Fubar addon (SkillsPlusFuLt) without any problems. I do still have the previous version installed on my other computer, and the fubar plugin.lua looked identical, so I'm not sure where else to look to see what changed.

If you take a look at the changelog, it says that I have given up trying to update ever panel stuff **** that I don't even use myself. MusicPlayer is not based on the ace libraries, and thus, I have to learn how those libraries work (just a few of them, though, but still) in order to update my fubar plugin. In addition, I have to keep track on when all those libraries is updated in order to get MusicPlayer's fubarplugin to load properly when only MusicPlayer and fubar is loaded. This alone is very time consuming and thus something I don't really want to do, as I don't even use it myself.

As commented below, I am not going to update every month as I used to do anymore, mostly because I really enjoy raiding, and when I'm not raiding I'm enjoying the sun, as it finally has gotten around to shine a bit where I live now. This means that MusicPlayer will stay updated - I am not going to let it drown, but I am not going to push through any major updates of improvance, but I will update it in the form of removing any bugs and keep it living.

TL;DR: The Plugins are gone, and read this wall of text anyway.
