What is HitsMode?

HitsMode is the premiere World of Warcraft combat log replacement. Boasting incredible power and flexibility, HitsMode completely transforms your combat log into readable, customizable text.

Features

  • Separate your combat into up to four windows
  • Colorize various parts of your combat log
  • Show or hide unit names, spell names, and sentence structure
  • Go with normal sentences or just the numbers
  • Multiple text layout options
  • Flags, color overlays, spell icons and raid icons let you see what's going on without a lot of text
  • Powerful filters let you see only what you want to
  • Personal combat summary counts your DPS, experience gained, and more
  • Copy your settings from character to character or save multiple presets
  • Integrated help system to get you started

Frequently asked questions

Why is this add-on named HitsMode?
The name HitsMode comes from the EverQuest /hitsmode command, which also allows you to configure your combat log.

Can HitsMode show timestamps, right align text, remove my chat window buttons, allow mouse wheel scrolling, change the font size of the combat log, allow my chat windows to be more resizable, etc?
No. HitsMode intentionally does not offer many chat related features. Please use a separate chat add-on like Prat or Chatter.

Why isn't the default Blizzard combat log going away?
HitsMode will not disable or hide the default Blizzard combat log. You can try hiding it yourself or docking it behind another chat window.

HitsMode is writing it's output to the Blizzard combat log window, but things aren't working properly!
I don't recommend putting HitsMode output in the Blizzard combat log (window #2). This can lead to unexpected behavior and is unsupported. HitsMode will allow you to do it, however.

For all other questions, please see the in-game knowledge base by opening the HitsMode options window and clicking the large ? icon.

Getting started

  • Install HitsMode and login. You should see a message in your chat window that HitsMode loaded. If you don't see this message, the add-on hasn't loaded. Check your add-ons screen to make sure you haven't disabled it (this screen is available at character select).
  • HitsMode is ready to go out of the box. A new chat window should appear, called "HitsMode 1". This window will at first be hidden behind your General Chat window. Drag it out and put it somewhere else.
  • If you don't want to see the Blizzard default combat log, hide the Combat Log window or dock it behind General Chat.
  • To configure HitsMode, type /hitsmode or /hm
  • For further help, please click the ? icon at the top right of the options window. There are many topics available there to get you started.
  • If HitsMode doesn't work at all, check the following:
    • Add-on is installed in your Interface/AddOns folder
    • Add-on is enabled in WoW
    • You're using the English client
    • If you're upgrading from a previous version and something doesn't work, load the default options. This is available from the Presets tab.
    • If nothing works, you probably have an add-on that's conflicting with HitsMode. Some chat add-ons have been known to cause problems. Try disabling these and see if it helps. Contact me if you find a specific conflict and I'll see what I can do.

History

  • HitsMode was first released in March 2005, about four months after WoW came out.
  • Allara is the original author of HitsMode, and has played WoW off and on since launch.
  • Elieehel and Tsurani have updated HitsMode in the past while Allara was gone.
  • WoW patch 2.4 (in March 2008) was Blizzard's first update to the combat log since launch. The new Blizzard combat log borrows some formatting ideas and even some of it's terminology from HitsMode. HitsMode and the default combat log are now similar in many ways, but HitsMode offers many more configuration possibilities and is suitable for advanced users.

Recolor Based on Spell School does not disable itself when you uncheck the box. I have all checkboxes for this turned off, but recoloring still happens.

Thanks - I'll add that school shortly.

  • To stellebelle: it is spellfire school damage that is not coded inside current hitsmode. Hopefully next version will fix it.

  • In the latest release I'm getting an unknown spell school error.

It seems to happen whenever I (or anyone close to me) gets the Light Bomb debuff on XT-002 Deconstructor (in Ulduar). I'm not sure if it does it for the Gravity Bomb or not.

It says something to the nature of: Hits Mode Unknown Spell School .spelschool > 66

You can turn off aura-related messages from the Messages tab in the HitsMode options window. You'll have to turn them all off, as I haven't implemented a white/black list yet for spells.

I used this addon for long time before blizzard version came out, tried blizzard version untill now I just took back hitsmode because just more clearly, how ever there 1 thing I cant seem to to work, Class colour name, does work for me and my allies, but doenst work for enemys, isnt it possble or is there option to turn it on, or will there be way to turn that on later state?

for the rest, still think hitsmode is way beter then blizzard version ;p

Color by class should be working for any unit that the game returns a class for, including mobs and other players. I'm not aware of any issues with this code; it's very simple and relies on the game client to return the correct information.

Is it possible to recolor poison (nature) dmg with this? I have filtering by type turned off, but it's still showing as green regardless. What I essentially want is for all of my outgoing damage to be one color and all incoming damage to be another, regardless of source or type. Same thing is happening with my other procs too.. in this case fire-based, and it won't recolor it properly.

You can configure the color of spell damage from the General tab. Scroll down and there is a color for each spell school. Or you can simply turn off "Recolor By Spell School", and the color will fall back to the event color itself.

  • Hey Allara, thanks for the responses and update. I have just one problem, when I disable the extra values option, or choose a different tab to check, it never shows any value. An example(w/ extra values on): I'm at full health and I cast a heal on myself that would heal me for 4K, but since extra values is on, it will come out as "+0(4000 overhealed)", which is what is intended. BUT, when I uncheck any extra values, it doesn't come out the way I'd like it to. Example(w/o extra values): I cast a heal on myself at full health for 4K, but in the hitsmode chat tab, it will come out as "+0". That's it, not showing the actual value, which I feel if this was intended, really ruins the purpose of not enabling extra values. Thanks.

So in other words, you want it so when you turn extra values off, overheal/overkill amounts get rolled back into the main value? I'll see if I can do this.

Hi, I love this addon, but I was wondering if there is a way of making the chat boxes smaller? I used to use this addon a while ago and I thought there was an option to override the Blizard limits on the chatbox size.

    Thanks.

Ah, Nevermind, I found out it was the Prat addon that let me make the window smaller. When Blizard changed their combat log, I stopped using this, but I missed it!

    Keep up the great work!

    Correct. Chatter also does it.

  • Every time a mod dies I get this errormessage:

I play WoW on a german client.

HitsMode does not support the German client. The error is occurring during the "You gain experience" event. Because no one has volunteered to localize this add-on in German, you will be unable to use several of the events, including this one. You will need to turn off this message to prevent the error. Most of the rest of the add-on will work regardless of your language, but other events including loot, honor gain, reputation gain, and a few others won't work.

New version is up that should fix the errors. Please let me know if this isn't the case.

This isn't abandoned. I'll push out a minor update in a bit to fix the errors, instead of the larger update I'd planned.
