Give Me Peace
Released 9th December 2009

Are you tired of the constant spam whispered to you from Gold sellers, Scammers, and other random whispers such as boost requests?

This addon is designed to block ALL whispers sent to your character who are not first authorised by you and silenty whisper the blocked player informing them that their whisper was hidden from you and ignored. Note that GM whispers are automatically authorised.

On loading of your character both your friends and guild list are scanned and automatically authorised by the addon and any whispers from those players will be shown as normal unless you manually add a player from your friends or guild list to the built in ignore feature.

Why did I write this?

Give Me Peace is an addon which I designed and programmed because of a few hours of constant whisper spam caused by a level 1 standing in Stormwind shouting "LFM For The Alliance, whisper Afterlife for invite".

Features Include:
•Auto scan friends/guild on login
•Auto authorise those you whisper first - i.e. when you whisper someone to join a raid or party.
•Inform the blocked player that his whisper was ignored and not visible by you and telling him if he feels he shouldnt be blocked to send you a in-game mail.
•Customise the whisper sent to the blocked player.
•Add/Delete or Ignore players manually - remember that all who are not authorised are ignored automatically, the ignore option is to override a friend or guild member who was scanned and authorised on login.
•Auto allow GM whispers.
•Log all blocked messages for the current session which can be viewed by typing /peace blocked
The default message sent to a player who is not on your authorised list reads:

"Important: Your whisper was rejected and hidden from <your name> because you are not on <your name>'s list of authorised friends. If you feel you should be on <your name>'s list then please send an in-game mail."

This default message is stored in the local.lua file and can be translated to your native language. If you translate this file please find the time to send it to me by private message and i'll include it in the release.

For options use /peace in-game. For quick switching ON/OFF of the addon you can use /peace toggle from the chat or inside a macro on your spell bar.

I hope you enjoy the use of this addon and the peace it brings with it. Please feel free to provide any feedback or offer suggestions.

Take care.

we're having spamming issues. My friend and I loaded it and 'ignored' eachother. When we whisper eachother, we get multiple messages scrolling, which ultimately crash our systems.

The addon is actually working as intended. However, the spam issue is caused due to the auto whisper sent to the blocked player. I will give an example to show whats happening with you and your friend:

    1) You whisper your friend who has you on ignore block.
    2) Your friend whispers you with the "you are blocked" message.
    3) You send out a "you are blocked" message back to your friend since your friend is also on block.
    4) Your friend sends out a "you are blocked" message because obviously your still trying to whisper with the blocked message when hes got you on block.

    see what i mean? =p

In the options you will find "Silently whisper blocked players." which tells the addon to send a whisper to the player who is not authorised and informing them that their message was blocked and to send you a mail if its important.

You have highlighted a glitch when two people use the same addon therefore I'll stick in a check to only whisper the blocked message to the same player within a 10 minute period to stop the vicious circle of spam.

    Thanks for the info.

This issue has been fixed in my test version and is caused by the Blizzard GetFriendInfo(index) API function returing a nil from the friends list. I'll get the update out as soon as possible.

  • I'm sorry if this is an obvious question but I was just hoping for some clarification. If you enable the addon and check the box for "Auto add friends list" ...your guildies cannot whisper you? What about if you are in a raid or grp? Are ppl automatically allowed to whisper you if they are in your raid?

The reason I ask is this seems like it might work for the often-nagged Raid Leader who just wants some peace and quiet from whispers during raid time. If (s)he were able to add ppl like the GM and officers to the friends list, then guildies could only contact the RL through raid chat or guild chat. Is that correct? I'm trying to make sure that just because you are grped with them doesn't mean they can whisper you if they are not on your friends list and you have not checked the box to auto add your guild list.

    Thanks

The addon will block all whispers regardless even if they are in your party or raid unless either:

    * That person is on your friends list already and therefore the addon authorised them autotmatically on login.
    * That person is a guild member in your guild.
    * You made first contact to that person and the addon automatically authroised him/her.
    * You manually added the person from the options screen.

The "Auto add friends list" tells the addon to scan those players on your friends list and authorise them when you login.
"Auto add guild member list." tells the addon to scan your whole guild list and authorise them when you login.

Basically, the addon will block everyone silently (or warn you) unless they are on your list of authorised players such as guild, friends list or those you have added manually.

If there not in your guild or on your friends list and you want them to be able to whisper you then you can do one of two things, whisper them first or add their name in the options screen and authorise them.

I'll look at adding support for titan bar.

  • Also, just wondering... is a LDB display support for something like Titan Panel something that you could add?

    Nice little add-on.

Any chance you could expand on it to make it report the fact that you are busy in <Current Location> like reporting back that you are fighting in Ulduar etc like the DBM whisper feature, or maybe also have an option to enter your own excuse (String), like "Busy doing Daily's or Fishing"?

Yes thats quite a nice idea, i'll look at including that so you can have it report a custom message of your choice.

Awesome add on. Just what I was looking for. Level 1 gold spammers have been painful lately and it's nice having an add on that actually tells them "you've been blocked."

Any possibility a level filter could be added? It's rare higher levels spam me and once in a while they're messaging me first from LFG. Otherwise it's not a huge deal since the mod tells me I've blocked them and I can catch it.

    Thanks you!

    Thanks, glad you like it.

I'll look at adding somthing regarding the level of the incoming whisper where you could enter a minimum level of whispers to be authorised - this would make sure the addon supports those still levelling.

It would be easier to just block level 1's but on our server we still have level 30's whispering for gold, boosts in instances and other random stuff so having that support there to block would cater for all players needs who use this addon.

    Thanks for the feedback.

    Thanks.

I had a ex guild member who found it amusing on several occasions to create a level 1 character and stand in Stormwind spamming for members to the "For The Alliance" achievement and asking them to whisper me while i was raiding Ulduar. This also happend to 3 others in the raid on different occasions - little things seem to please little minds.

Since the Blizzard ignore list is of a limited size this presented a problem which was why I decided to develop this addon originally for personal use then I later decided to release it.

Anyway glad you like it, take care.
