  • About Framerate Adjuster
  •

Future improvements to Framerate Adjuster will appear in the new WoW++ project.

Summary

Framerate adjuster runs quietly, monitoring average framerate. If your framerate drops below your preferred fps (30 by default), it reduces terrain distance until framerate is again acceptable. If framerate later improves, your field of view is again extended to allow you to see more of the world in front of you. Framerate adjuster reduces terrain distance rapidly to quickly adjust to a sudden drop in framerate, but extends it slowly to avoid causing "loading lag" as far away landscape objects become visible. Framerate adjuster runs quietly and unobtrusively, and requires no custom setup or maintenance.

Instructions

To change the preferred minimum framerate, type /fra [framerate].

Example : /fra 40

Framerate adjuster tries to keep a reasonable framerate despite changes in scenery, but can only do so much with the terrain distance graphics setting. For an OVERALL better framerate, try adjusting other graphics settings such as resolution, lighting, and texture and landscape detail.

May i suggest you include the feature that reduces the visibillity to minimum when im about to teleport/hearthstone so it makes loading faster and resume the normal work when i arrive after teleport

this could potentially cut loading times by up to 60%

maybe you should also include shadow quality, as with a medium-end gfx/cpu config this one is the more scalable FPS booster... :-)

  • What is the WoW++ project?

Also, I have a macro to improve quality of the graphics:

    /console farclip 783
    /console horizonfarclip 6226
    /console groundeffectdist 140
    /console smallcull 0
    /console groundEffectDensity 256
    /console detailDoodadAlpha 100
    /console maxLOD 3
    /console SkyCloudLOD 3
    /console characterAmbient

I want to know that this addon will INCREASE graphics as much as possible if the fps is higher than the setting, and to also go beyond the default maximum, like this addon does. Can you make sure of that?

  • Framerate Adjuster only changes the terrain distance setting. If your preferred FPS is higher than the current FPS, your terrain distance will extend out. Otherwise, it will pull closer.

Also, WoW enforces limits on the graphics options that neither macros nor addons can break. Just because you don't get an error message doesn't mean your macro does what it says ("silent failure" is the term).

  • Oh and, what is the WoW++ project?

  • Yes, there's a max limit that neither addons nor macros can break, but addons and macros are able to extend it a little beyond what's allowed by the Default Interface window. For instance, the default maximum camera distance is 30, but the maximum allowed by the associated API command is 50. Other settings like groundEffectDensity can be increased beyond the default through use of a macro or addon.

I just want to make sure the view distance will extend out to the maximum possible from addons (if the framerate can handle it), and not to just the default maximum, make sense?

The other reason I posted that macro is there's some other changes in there that don't require a restart of the client to affect framerate. They could possibly be included in your addon's auto-adjustment. Just a suggestion.

  • Thanks for this info. I'd need a lot more details.. to start with, do you know (for certain) the actual limit to terrain distance?

  • I tested farclip and the maximum seems to be 1277. All the other ones I couldn't find a maximum for if it's not what's already included in the posted macro.

    Thank you for the update(s).

But I'd like to know if you only changed the toc to not be shown as outdated, or if something technically has changed to the previous version.

  • I'd like to second Farook's comment and question.

I'd also like to know what this WoW++ project is, and if the functionality of Framerate Adjuster is just going to be part of some larger addon or if its functionality will remain available as a separate item. (Or at the very least, can I shut the rest off and basically have FrAdj under a different name?)

  • There's no change to the code. Whenever I make changes that alter functionality, I always note it in the change log. If all I say in the change log is that it was updated to 3.0.2, what I mean is that I updated TOC and re-tested to make sure everything still works before uploading.

Maintaining 6 separate addons has become a maintenance problem for me. Framerate Adjuster functionality will become part of the larger addon, but let me assure you that I'm not adding ANY functionality in that addon "pack" that would disrupt your gameplay experience. All functionality that could conceivably be disliked will be off by default, and can be toggled on in your options menus.

    Will this be updated?

Or is it not necessary to run this mod anymore?

  • Expect an updated version this week. Also for my other addons. -RH

  • I've just decided to start playing again. I'll update this addon for the current version of WoW. Right now, I notice it has some issues, so there will be some debugging and coding involved, so stay tuned. Eventually, I will incorporate this addon into a larger addon and provide a user interface with a slider to make using it without slash commands possible.

  • rearlly sorry but how do i use this with world or warcraft running? or not ?

  • It always goes to minimum terrrain when your framerate sucks hard. Next time it does that, go quickly to your video settings and you'll see that your terrain bar is at the minimum.

  • I really like this addon, but I just found out it's the reason I've been getting 2-4 FPS in 25-man instances... which is really bad when I'm tanking..

I would like an option where it sets my terrain distance to the minimum setting when in instances AND/OR when in combat.

or a hotkey to force it to minimum terrain (kind of like a disable button) so I can easily turn it off when I need too. Every other time I love this mod, it's just during boss fights with lots of ppl around :(

  • So I just noticed that this addon has way more favorites than other addons of mine which I consider to be much more useful. Very strange!

I'm looking forward to the day I'll have a graphic card capable of more than 25 fps. This seems to be a very nice little app. Too bad my computer is so incredibly slow that even FA can't manage to help it. :)

What a brilliant addon. Blizz should incorporate this as standard.

    Great work.
