FollowMe

Dedicated to Spycy...the inspiration for this AddOn and love of my life :)

Author: Kinyen (THE original) eMail: druidkinyen@hotmail.com

This AddOn allows party or raid members to put you on auto-follow - useful for people who suddenly go AFK without telling anyone. This AddOn is especially useful for those who two-box; it makes driving a lot easier :).

Normally, players can auto-follow any other player, but since this AddOn allows other people to control you, it purposely is restricted to members of your party or raid.

FollowMe is different from FollowTheLeader in that it requires the follow commands to be at the beginning of whisper (i.e. "!follow"). That way if someone is whispering directions to you like "Simply follow the path south", you won't automatically start following them. :)

These commands are supported: "/fm announce" - announces to your party that you have this AddOn. "/fm enable" - Allows others to put you on auto-follow. "/fm disable" - Does not allow others to put you on auto-follow. "/fm tellgroup [on | off]- Turns on (or off) the sending of auto-follow messages to your group. "/fm status" - Reports the status of FollowMe (enabled, disabled, who is being followed).

If someone wishes to put you on auto-follow, they simply need to send a whisper (usually via a macro button) with "!follow". When the AddOn sees this command, it will attempt to auto-follow the whisper sender.

The received whisper can be one of: "!follow" - Puts auto-follow on the whisper sender "!status" - whispers the status (enabled/disabled and AddOn version) to the sender. If following, will report who is being followed.

I got this, and i like the concept, but i tried this with a friend, and it laged bad - like his toon right behind me did the jerky-run motion, and i can only run for about 15sec before i have to stop and let him catch up, else auto-follow breaks.

could it be the addon? cuz were on the same network in my house, he is wireless, im on lan-cable : let me know if this is the addon doing it or wat. thanks.

It's definitely not the AddOn. Once you're on auto-follow, it the AddOn no longer does anything (except monitor the whisper chat channel which doesn't cause lag).

Try going on auto-follow manually and see if you have the same problem. I've noticed the issue on my Windows computer without any AddOns installed, manually going on auto-follow.

Blizzard is always messing with the graphics engine. At risk of sounding like giving "catch-all" advice, check your graphics driver. Also, if you can wire the wireless computer and see if the problem goes away, that might be it as well. Although, I've noticed it on two wired computers...one with a crappy graphics card.

    Quoting from the Description...

So, unless your guild member is in your party or raid, no.

As many people have requested, to remove the behavior of whispering "I am following you!" to random people you autofollow, you merely have to change a single line of code in the .lua file:

    search and change the following:

    SendChatMessage(message, "WHISPER", nil, name);

by adding the commenting-symbol "--" before it:

    --SendChatMessage(message, "WHISPER", nil, name);

Well, yeah, that would work...but you'd be making a permanent change to the code. A better option is for me to put in an option to turn it off. When I was testing this before, not having the whisper in there pissed some people off because they went auto-follow on someone who didn't know it and the leader jumped on his mount, leaving the follower out in the middle of nowhere and subsequently died.

The way the AddOn is written, it will respond to the event that is triggered when you start following someone -- this includes manually auto-following someone (i.e. you right-click their portrait and select Follow).

How does this sound? If auto-follow is initiated as a result of receiving the !follow whisper, an optional whisper is sent; if auto-follow is not initiated from a !follow whisper, it will always send the whisper. That way, if the leader tells the person to follow, he would know that the player is following. Failure-to-follow and mount-warning messages will always be sent. The reason being because if someone decides to follow you and you didn't tell them to, you could inadvertently run them off a cliff.

Please e-mail me directly (druidkinyen@hotmail.com) with any suggestions you have as I do not monitor this board on a daily basis and curse.com won't tell me when someone posts a message.

I think FollowMe could become even more handy and intuitive (in terms of game-play and role-play), if you could make it react to the game's built-in /followme emote, probably with either another built-in emote or its own emotes, instead of a private whisper - and then auto-follow the initiating player upon this, as long as it's a party/guild member, friend or the currently targeted unit (optional).
I'm mostly using Cellular (which is similar to WIM) for my whispering issues, so that's where I agree that unexpected whispers can be annoying on the receiving side.
The general idea of being able to make someone else follow you is very nice as well as to have a notification on this for both sides, but while journeying and questing together we often auto-follow each other manually for smaller routes or if one has to go AFK for short. - It would be much lighter on the game-play side at this point to see something like "harl nods at Kinyen. (maybe if initiated remotely, and then) harl is now following Kinyen.", "Kinyen stopped following harl." or "Kinyen can't follow harl now, because he is still busy." in the default chat (of course that couldn't be applied to a situation where the player is out of range since he/she would probably not see the emote as well). - Additionally, when using custom emotes you could change the names displayed to the one being followed display as "you" instead (and vice versa), producing a similar result as the in-game emotes (yea, since this is just a local change that of course needs the one being followed to have the add-on then too;-).
Though I'm not able to present you any code, integrating this idea into FollowMe seems doable to me without changing its original functionality. - Just what I'd recommend is to keep as much of it optional as long as one action doesn't strictly rely on another - meaning that auto-following someone doesn't really have to include the issue of a whisper (but it wouldn't make much sense the other way), so optionally turning off any textual interaction would be a rather logical step to me.

On a side note, localisation would be nice (yea, I know you already mentioned that in the readme file, and it's not too hard to change all the text myself:).
Also, a "sticky" feature would be cool (although not essential at all), but I suspect it to be too complicated to analyse by an add-on, because following a party member doesn't mean that I automatically enter combat with him/her, so I'd have to attack something while auto-follow was enabled without cancelling it by doing so, then when in combat I could cancel it and the add-on would seemingly know that I might want to continue auto-following when I come out of combat (it would be much easier though to just manually/remotely re-follow) -or- the sticky feature would have to be toggled on and off manually (if initiated by the follower). - Alternatively, this could make being left alone in the wilderness a thing of the past by automatically re-following the followee when he/she comes into range again and if the follower didn't move in the meantime (if the following was initiated remotely or because the follower went AFK after manually following).

    Ok, enough babbling me. ;)

    Hi all!
I just have made a modified version of this addon. Added a tellwhisper function to toggle annoying whispers, and fixed some bugs in message sending. I want to bring this to the author's notice, it's worth considering to apply these to a future version.
Sorry for making this without asking for permission, hope you'll still like it.
All the credit goes to Kinyen, I just made the changes.

    Here's the link: http://sajt-klan.extra.hu/private/Borda/FollowMe.rar

Hope you'll send me a message if you liked my work, or if you include it in the next version.

Please keep in mind I don't regularly monitor this site, so I won't always seen new posts right away. If you find issues with the AddOn, you're encouraged to e-mail me at druidkinyen@hotmail.com. You'll be sure to get a quicker response (and update if necessary).

I don't mind that you modify the code to suit your own needs, but, keep in mind, the whisper-sending function is critical, especially if you go on auto-follow manually. You run a serious risk of being led into trouble, especially if you are auto-following the pulling-tank in your raid and the next thing you know you're boss toe-cheese or falling off a cliff because the leader took a shortcut that didn't take into account he was being followed (because he didn't know it). I put the whisper feature in because this actually happened when I was testing the AddOn with my guild. They were a little upset at the fact that the raid was held up waiting to rez someone who was a key player (the only priest) and led into a bowl of lava.

I'm not entirely sure what "message sending" bugs you're speaking of...I've tested this code extensively (I have a live-in beta tester...lol) and with the exception of rare UI events causing the player to be stuck "busy", everything works as designed. I'll be posting a fix to the "busy" problem soon.

Also, if you find bugs and fix them, that's fine as well, but you really must send me the changes (assuming you're fixing a legitimate bug and not an undesirable feature). I'm getting ready to release an update that will definitely not include your changes. Posting your fixes creates a different source path which causes problems for people when official releases are made.

Again, I welcome suggestions always...and I really want to know if there are any bugs or shortcomings so I can incorporate them into future releases/updates. Also, please e-mail me your changes in ZIP format since I don't (and won't) use RAR.

agreed 100% with Saecula. the auto-whispering behavior is incredibly annoying and caused me to be unable to use this addon. I wish it could be disabled with an option; I bet many others feel the same way

I feel the opposite way regarding whispers: If I manually follow someone, then I do not want them to receive a whisper.

By not whispering, it's not any worse than if I had followed them without having this addon installed.

For me, the only time I want a whisper to go out from me to another player is as a response to them issuing a follow command to me, just to confirm that now I am following them, or that there was a problem (out of range).

I like having this addon, but by having it, I am always reluctant to manually follow someone, because they get sent a whisper that in my opinion they don't really need to see, and if I were on the receiving end, I would find it slightly annoying.

When *you* have the AddOn installed, it allows others to put *you* on auto-follow. Installing this addon for yourself doesn't allow you to put others on auto-follow unless they have the AddOn.

    1) I've grappled with this for a while...I know in my own personal "testing" (i.e. Spycy), if I'm on auto-follow and my leader doesn't realize it, she can possibly dump me off a cliff (and has before...lol). It is possible to put in an option that would turn off whispers for manually-initiated auto-follow, but it is almost necessary for the leader to have those whispers because they will know that the follow attempt worked and will also be alerted when auto-follow ends.

    2) The mount-warning code triggered by the casting of a spell. However, it's rather odd that the mount-warning isn't sent if you're in travel form or ghost wolf -- the code does not specifically look for that. I will check into including shape-shift spells in the check.

However, it begs the question -- do you think it should not bother checking for mounts if you're in flight form? I personally like it when I warn someone that I'm not on my mount because I'm in flight form -- sort of a reminds me to get on my mount. I could make it an option if that would seem better.

I will soon be posting an update that supports localization. I will look into including the shape-shift spells in the mount-check code before I post the update.

  • I really enjoy using this mod. Just a couple of comments:
    1) it would be nice if I didn't send whispers to people who I'm manually choosing to follow... It confuses them, poor dears ;)
    2) when in druid flight forms, I still say "Warning! I am not on my mount!" - a concern that isn't usually warranted at such times. IIRC, this warning isn't sounded if I'm in shaman ghost wolf or druid travel form.

I forgot to update the description in the TOC file - it still says 1.52. This is purely cosmetic and has no affect on the functioning code, therefore I'm not uploading a new file. If this is a concern, you can simply go to the Interface\AddOns\FollowMe folder and edit the FollowMe.toc file with Notepad. Change the 1.52 to 1.6, or simply remove the number altogether.

  • what is the command to give to signal others using this addon to set you on follow?

I feel like a total goob but I can't find functional instructions anywhere - the usage message doesn't help either (/fm).

    send a whisper:
    /t "!follow"
You can also send a group announce /fm announce and it tells the group the command :) all this is in the readme :)

I'm sorry it took me so long to get back to you :( I've been a bit busy with work/life.

  • Nevermind *facedesk* since I used the curse client to install it I never saw the readme.txt in the addon directory.

May I suggest that there is information given on the info page for this addon somewhere that points that out?
