  • About FindRole
  •

FindRole attempts to find players of a certain role for your group, and asks them to join you via a whisper.

It does exactly what players do, should they use /who to search for players to join their group. Only, it's much faster, doesn't forget names, and you don't have to madly push buttons or type things in. It will ask players once, and once only. And won't ask players that are already in your party or already in instances.

To use FindRole simply type /findrole (or /fr) to bring up the FindRole UI. The rest is self explanatory.

Also, type /findrole help for a list of FindRole slash commands not on the UI.

sometimes my "findrole" just flip out and ask completely wrong ppl
I search healer for zulfarak and it asked a mage in 22 if he wanned to heal
Then he asked a hunter in lvl 70...
It worked before but now its **** up

The /who system in WoW is finicky and dodgy at best. When it decides there's too many strings in the string match it goes "AHHH! **** me!", spaz' out and looks for whatever it bloody well wants to. Much like a lunatic being allowed into a gun shop or chocolate factory.

There is a small chance that the /who system has had a minor alteration with one of the latest patches. At any rate, I've run a bunch of tests and it all comes up fine. So I guess I'll have to re-code the who matches into something better.

Uploaded a new version. For players less than level 78, the max level cap is increased by 2. And for level 78 players, the max level cap is increased by 1.

How long does it "blacklist" a player for? Does it "blacklist" them per search (eg. if it asks them in tank, will it not ask them in dps?). Why limit the level to my current level. That makes it highly unusable when I'm just high enough to get into an instance...I don't want to run it with a group of lowbies. How about a "my level" +5 rule or similar to still avoid blatant spam. Also I'd like things like dps or tank etc to be in caps (picky I know) or form a sentence like "Want to DPS..." or "Want to Tank..."

If you would consider these changes and maybe display a list of the previous contacted people in the GUI, I'd be really pleased and find it far more usable.

It will "blacklist" as you say, on a per role basis. And the "blacklist" will last until the player logs out, or resets the UI, or by typing "/fr reset".

I put the level restrictions in place to prevent just this from happening. But I do see your point and think that a cap +2 of the players level would be more than appropriate. I do discourage asking higher level players to do instances for you, especially the level 80 wotlk instances.

The reason why the whispers are short and un-editable is mainly to prevent griefing. Players actually prefer to have short messages rather than having their DEFAULT_CHAT_FRAME filled up with text.

The whispers are already logged in the DEFAULT_CHAT_FRAME.

Alright, I've updated this for 3.1.0. The only bug I found is that the FriendsFrame would sometimes open when pressing the off button.

Let me know if you find anything else please.

Another version incoming. I've made some great improvements to the search code. I've added a quick search mode, less thorough, but much faster at finding matches.

The default for quick search mode is "on", but if you want more thorough searches you can turn it off with " /findrole quick ", to toggle it off and on.

Also a bunch of other minor improvements, that you may or may not notice. They'll be in changes when the file is approved.

Ok, I've just uploaded a new version, the default search interval is now 5 seconds, and the search interval can now be set to a minimum of 5 also. Keep in mind that if a search fails to find any results, it will be 5 more seconds until the next search (due to blizzard wholist restrictions).

On a busy day, you might want to change the search interval to a higher setting with /findrole interval #.

Try Polite Whisper, I find it so much better.

Ok, I just tried this "Polite" Whisper mod. I can see a few similarities, but I don't really like it over FindRole. One of the major reasons is you have to keep clicking the "Ask" button on the UI. I made FindRole to minimize repeated typing of /who, the constant on clicking things with the mouse, and madly typing in whispers trying to quickly fill up a group. And to -have- to do that (clicking each persons "Ask" button) in Polite Whisper, I just didn't like it. Also when it does populate their custom made wholist, there's chance that an "Ask" will change to another players button right before you press it. When in FindRole, you set the vars, similar to Polite Whisper, then press the start button and watch it whisper people.

Another thing is that you can hear the mod actually opening and closing the FriendsFrame. The "Clunk" noise every 5-6 seconds, you know, the one that drives you mad. I solved that problem in FindRole.

Another thing which I really don't like is there's great potential for abuse with that mod. Why, you could get it to whisper any old thing. Sell gold, advertise some malware, pester players with alts... Probably not what the author had in mind I think.

  • i guess there is something i am just not seeing ive done this a few different ways.

first i wrote /fr and put in 1-27 and press start. time went by and the first person was msgd and my msg said ? hi so when the person received it they saw dps? hi. I was in the dps menu at the time.

then i thought maybe the interval number is how many seconds goes by before the next person is msgd, so i tried changing it but 10 is the lowest. Question is the interval number how many seconds goes by before the next person is msgd?

I am unsure of this because i stayed with 1-27 and sat there watching it an dit msgd 3 4 people and that was it. I had all classes selected minus DK. I assumed when i put in 1-27 for the dps menu or w/e menu i was on it would msg everyone 1-27 with Dps? Instance? Boss?

one improvement i would suggest insted of when it msgs people it doesnt just say tank dps heal with the instance right behind it, maybe Tank? instance? we are on boss w/e or fresh run. Because you are asking a question if they would like to go. Are you a tank? are you heals? are you dps?

is there a way to msg people quicker? seemed like when it did worked it msgd people 1 time every 30 seconds to a minute

Not because the mod is slow, but because it's not finding much in the searches. There's a couple of reasons for this. One is because you're looking for players level 1 to 27. And the other is because it's being thorough and looking for players in every zone in the game.

Give it time, and the zones with nil players will be excluded from the search.

  • I like the idea of this addon very much but seems hard to use, i dont know if i have to /fr set it to what i want it to say and then so a /who for those levels. When i do it that way it msgs one person at a time and i have to re use /who level class to get it to msg the next person.

i assumed when i first came across this that i would do a /who on lets say 15-20 and then started my /fr put in my needs for roles and then the level and press start is would just message the people 15-20. It didnt do that, not sure if it was suppose to.

wish it was easier that way i described above, type in /who 15-20 type /fr put in what i want and press start and it would auto msg everyone it applied to.

Is there a set way you use it?

No, it doesn't work like that, you only have to press that start button then leave it. You don't use the /who whatsoever.

I don't think you're being very truthful here... Unless you messed around with the .lua, it's not possible for the mod to whisper "? hi" or "dps? hi"

How are you having trouble using it? The UI is very self explanatory, you put the instance you're doing in the instance field, you put the boss you're on in the boss field, set the level requirements, and push the start button.

The search interval is the time it takes after a successful whisper. If it does a search and doesn't find anything it will use 5 seconds because of wholist restrictions.

You can say "dps instance? we are on bossName" or "dps instance? fresh run" by typing that ('we are on bossName' and 'fresh run') in the boss field.

No I don't think that's a very good idea, as it will clog up the users default_chat_frame with 30 or 40 whispers at times, and then further clog it up with 30 or 40 replies.

I may experiment with shorter search intervals on successful whispers.

After some testing from my trusty posse of in-house testers I discovered something alarming. When using it on their low level character they would inadvertently ask level 80 players to do low level instances with them. Certainly not what I intended my mod to do! So, I have uploaded a new version, currently awaiting approval. The instance default will be nil. The min and max level defaults will both be the characters level. And setting the mod to search for players with higher levels than your own will be restricted. Also removing version 1.0 shortly.
