  • About ChatSync
  •

I wanted a simple Chat mod that had several of the features that Prat had, without all the modules or additions that Prat comes with.

Basically I implemented the Chat features that mostly everyone enjoys and uses. This mod is extremely small and simple but gives you the following abilities.

USE: /chatsync or /cs to access the menu!

ChatSync Features:

  • Show player level next to their name in messages.
  • Show player level by difficulty color in messages.
  • Color player names by their class.
  • Ability to attach alts to players and have it display next to their name when they send messages.
  • Display a timestamp next to messages.
  • Enable sticky channels so the chat frame remembers the last channel you used.
  • Show the Chat Input Box on the top of the Chat Frame instead of the bottom.
  • Allow clickable url links to be shown in the Chat Frame.
  • Hide Chat menu buttons.
  • Hide Chat scroll buttons.
  • Store player names by player faction only.
  • Use CTRL to scroll faster in the chatbox, or holt ALT to scroll to the top/bottom.
  • Options to use H:M:S or H:M timestamp.
  • Option to remove the Editbox background from chat frame.

    • Alt Names:
  • To add an alt type: /chatsync addalt altname=mainname
  • To remove an alt type: /chatsync remalt altname
  • To list all alts type: /chatsync listalt

Config Screen:
-To access the configuration screen for ChatSync type: /chatsync config

How ChatSync grabs the user information:
Player data including their class and level is grabbed and stored locally. This can be done through several ways (All of which are automatic!). The data will be retrieved from your friends list, guild list, player leveling, raid roster update, party members joining/leaving, clicking on a player, mouse over a player, and finally using the /who command.

If a player in chat does not have their class color or level, simply SHIFT+LEFT-CLICK their name to do a /who search. That will automatically update the database for the next time that player sends a message.

Been trying to find an efficient way of doing it. Unfornately the only way I've devised of doing this is storing all the chat into an array. That would take up way too much memory. Unfornately, Blizzard has no real way of checking to see what's been done in the chat log. I will continue to try to devise alternate ways of doing this. So for right now the Chat copy and clear functions are on hold.

Excellent addon! Thanks for taking the time to put this together. I was using Prat before but it had way too much going on for a chat mod. This one's simple, functional, and gives me just what I need.

The only thing it's missing is a Copy feature which you just mentioned that you are working on; I can't wait!

Yeah I'm trying to add the copy feature, but add it without it taking up so much memory. I don't want to store the entire chat log into memory for the addon to load in order to use a copy feature. Which is why I've been trying alternative methods.

Oh I completely understand. I would want to see this add-on turn into something bloated like some of the other chat mods I'm aware of.

  • Hi!
Got a little question about the "Sticky Channels" option.

So normally I'm used to press "enter" to write in for example /g and when somebody whispers me i just hit the reply button which is not the same as "enter" mentioned above. So the reply button lets me instantly reply to whispers. After that, when I want to talk in /g again i usually simply press enter as before and it lets me talk in /g again.

So now heres the problem: With ChatSync and "Sticky Channels" activated it takes me back to reply after whispering to somebody, it doesn't switch back to /g. So normally u have like 2 chats being remembered. The /r when pressing the reply button and the /g for example when pressing the chat button. This won't work with "Sticky Channels" activated and then again when deactivating "Sticky Channels" it always choses /s for default upon pressing "enter" for the chat function.

Is this behaviour intentional or is it a bug? Is it possible to get this back to the normal style where it would leave the re-whisper function from being remembered when pressing "enter" for chat?

Big text, small problem... sry but i don' know how to explain this any shorter. ^^

Hmm I'm going to have to look at this. Sorry for the delay in response had finals and papers to work on. If it is indeed the way you state I may need to look into a better way of implementing it.

I'm working on the Copy feature folks. This should be released in the next version hopefully.

Scrollback or chat buffer is a little tricker since that would require the mod saving the chat log into memory. Sure it may sound harmless but it can start to consume lots of memory resources if too large. Since everyone has different ideas as to how much chat should be stored, incorporating a scrollback feature may be problematic. However, I will take that into consideration :)

Oh a sound playing when you get a PM is already in the works. Expect that in the next version!

  • Derkyle,
Thanks for the updates and listening. Everything is great.

    - Missing Copy feature.
    - Any way to add additional scrollback (ie: allow xx number of lines of scrollback from a bigger chat history buffer)?

Aside from that, you have done a great job so far!

    Hello again :)

The only thing i'm missing now aside from the clear option is that when someone PM me i like to have a little sound playing (like msn ding), do you think it's possible to add such a sound ? Thanks in advance ;) (you can use the sound in the shared media library to keep your package light :))

Added the scrolling ability in 1.3. I will see about adding the clear ability in the next version.

Next update is going to contain some new features and fixes to certain bugs. I think folks will like the updates. Most of them are features users have requested. (Yes this includes the timestamp one)

  • just noticed, that it would be nice to have an option to show/hide seconds of the timestamp, since display of seconds take a large amount of space in the chat windows, but aren't really necessary. I know it's possible to remove display of seconds by editing the addons files, but the changes are gone every time after updating the addon to a new version.

  • This addon is nice but missing a couple key features.

    1. Copy and Paste capability.
    2. Scrolldown reminder / auto scrolldown after given period of time.
    3. Ability to scroll faster by holding CTRL while using the wheel.

Other than that, this is wonderful. It works great as is, but the copy/paste are kinda necessary.

    Thanks for the good work!
