By entering into any battleground, you're assuming the role of a soldier in that particular force attempting to seize victory for your faction. You're playing. that role.
Whenever you kill someone, you're doing it because it's your duty as a member of your faction to do it, again, you're assuming that role.

You could also easily say that just by selecting a character at the character selection screen, you are also taking on a role. Role-play comes in at different levels and everyone takes on the level they are most comfortable with. I think it's one of the best aspects of MMOs is that the opportunity is open for everyone.
