Sunwell Plateau Overview

Patch 2.4 introduced a brand-new 25-person raid instance for top-tier guilds who have been busy with Black Temple for the last several months. The instance? None other than Sunwell Plateau -- the location of Kel'Thuzad's rebirth as a lich -- during Warcraft III's Scourge campaign which ultimately saw the near-destruction of Azeroth.

The Legion is back at their old tricks now, with Kael'thas Sunstrider guiding his magic-addicted blood elf brethren to open a portal once again, this time to bring the Demon Lord, Kil'jaeden the Deceiver, to Azeroth's doorstep.

This instance is both steeped in lore, and offers incredible challenges as it introduces some of the most dynamic content World of Warcraft has ever seen.

Attunement

Sunwell Plateau does not require any attunement to enter but there are three barriers in the zone itself that block access to the later bosses. Breaking through these barriers does not require any effort on the part of the players; they will open up over time, at the exact same time, across every realm. This was done by Blizzard to ensure that each guild has a chance to join in on the cross-realm rivalries and competition brought about by new raid instances.

NPC Locations

There are three boss encounters players will come across initially in Sunwell Plateau: Kalecgos (and Sathrovarr the Corruptor), Brutallus, and Felmyst. The three remaining encounters are unlocked over time by the opening of barriers; ultimately players will face off against none other than Kil'jaeden the Deceiver, in a battle to protect Azeroth from another invasion by the Burning Legion.

Beyond Agamath, the First Gate

Agamath is the first gate which will open over time in Sunwell Plateau. Beyond it you will find the Eredar Twins encounter -- Grand Warlock Alythess and Lady Sacrolash.

Beyond Rohendor, the Second Gate

Once the barrier on Rohendor is shattered, players will have access to the fifth encounter in the zone -- a two-phase, two-mob encounter -- M'uru and Entropius.

Beyond Archonisus, the Final Gate

Archonisus is the final gate standing in the way of players before their battle with Kil'jaeden the Deceiver. Once it has fallen, the entire server will gain access at the same time, and the race to save Azeroth will begin. There will of course be incredible spoils from winning the encounter, including a new legendary bow.

This is an encounter which takes place in two locations. In one, you fight the corrupted dragon Kalecgos; in the other you help Kalec the humanoid fight off his inner demon -- Sathrovarr the Corruptor.

  • Brutallus Encounter Details

Brutallus is the second encounter players will come across. He's a pit lord of the Burning Legion who has lost his wings in battle, as well as several other body parts; of which his hands have been replaced with deadly blades.

  • Felmyst Encounter Details

Felmyst is the third encounter players will come across in the instance. The recently slain Madrigosa, corrupted by the blade of Brutallus, is now a haunting dragon skeleton. Players will have to defeat this once-powerful member of the Blue Dragonflight to continue on in the instance.

  • Eredar Twins Encounter Details

The Eredar twins are the fourth encounter in the zone, and will only be accessible after the first barrier -- Agamath, the First Gate -- has been breached. This will occur naturally, over time, so players need not worry about completing any sort of quest to access them.
