Design A World of Raids Logo Contest

World of Raids needs a new logo; something that truly conveys what the website stands for. While everyone is familiar with the WoR acronym if you visit the site, a passerby may not be, and we want our logo to be a symbol recognizable by everyone. What's even better is we were able to purchase an extra BlizzCon ticket on May 30th, and we're giving it away in this contest to the winner!

So this is your chance to not only contribute to the World of Raids community, but also win a BlizzCon ticket for your creation! Read below to find out how to enter. Please note this is only a ticket to enter BlizzCon; we're unfortunately not able to provide air fare or hotel accomodations.

How To Enter

Between June 13th, 2009 and June 27th, 2009 you'll be able to send in your entry for the contest. The logo must be a maximum of 200 pixels in width, and 100 pixels in height, with a transparent background. Please save the file in PSD format to retain its layers.

Olympic Pose Contest Winners

We're very excited to announce the 20 winners for the Curse Olympic Pose contest held from August 11th, 2008 to August 25th, 2008. We had a staggering number of entries in the contest -- close to 1,800 -- and it was incredibly difficult whittling those down to only 20. Suffice to say, there would be many more winners if we had access to more than 20 WWI cards. Everyone did a great job with their screenshots, and we hope it added a new form of fun to World of Warcraft, if only for a while.

The winners were chosen based on a number of criteria. Anything from creative use of the game's content and landscapes, the theme of the screenshot being based on the Olympics, or just a breathtaking capture of the amazing art Blizzard has created while showing off how proud of your character you are. It was great to see so many creative submissions, and it leaves all of us here at Curse with a feeling of anticipation for the next contest we can cook up. Needless to say, this won't be our last contest.

Have you ever dreamed of competing in the Olympics, but you just couldn't make the cut? Well worry not; with our Olympic Pose Contest -- running from Monday, August 11th, 2008 through Monday, August 25th, 2008 -- you can show off your competitive prowess while also entering to win one of 20 Worldwide Invitational Goodie Bag cards! These are the very cards given out in Paris, France at this year's Blizzard Worldwide Invitational, where Diablo III was announced!

Not only will each of the lucky 20 winners receive entry into the Wrath of the Lich King Beta Test, but they'll also get their very own mini Tyrael from the Diablo franchise thanks to Tyrael's Hilt! Both of these fantastic prizes come on the coveted WWI '08 card, and entering to win one is easy -- read on for the rules!

UPDATE: As we've receieved a few questions regarding this, we'd like to mention that Wrath of the Lich King areas do not count for this contest.

How To Enter

The first thing you'll want to do is register here on Curse.com if you haven't, so you're ready to go through the rest of the submission process. It's free, easy, and has a number of advantages beyond this contest. To learn more about Curse.com and the entire Curse Network, head over to the Curse Network page.
Next up you'll need to be in the competitive spirit. To do this, login to World of Warcraft and participate in the Spirit of Competition event and obtain a competitor's tabard. To do this, simply join a battleground and stay for the entire duration. Once the battleground has ended and you've received your Marks of Honor, you should be eligible for the tabard and have it sent to you via in-game mail.
Now that you have your tabard, you'll need to show it off. We want to see just how proud you are, so find the coolest place you can either on Azeroth or Outland (Northrend / Wrath of the Lich King Areas excluded) where you can take a screenshot. Once you've found your perfect location, be sure to disable your UI; we wouldn't want it messing up the screenshot! You can do this by pressing Alt + Z (default keybinding to disable the UI).
After getting rid of the UI clutter, the only thing left to do is show off. We want you to do this by emoting with the /flex slash command. Capture that perfect /flex pose in your screenshot and you're set!
Upload the Screenshot here on Curse in the special Screenshots / Olympic Pose Contest category; it's important to make sure you upload it here as all other categories will not be counted in the contest!
Once all that is done, it's time to wait it out and cross your fingers.

Rules

Only one entry per user. Multiple entries may disqualify all entries from that account and any future contests on Curse.com.
- If you decide at a later date you've found a better location to screenshot, delete your other entry prior to uploading the new entry. Entries are allowed until Monday, August 25th, 2008.
Any UI elements present in screenshot will automatically disqualify that specific screenshot. The User Interface must be hidden by using the Alt + Z keybinding.
The screenshot must clearly display the Competitor's Tabard handed out by participating in the Spirit of Competition event running in World of Warcraft.
/flex is the only valid emote for entry into the contest, and must be clearly visible in the screenshot.
Images must be submitted in .jpg format.
A valid email address must be used to create your Curse.com account. Winners will be contacted via this email address.

Tips

Capturing that perfect flex can be challenging -- timing is of the essence -- so here are a few quick tips!

Before hiding your UI, create a /flex macro and bind this to an easily accessible key.
Once you've hidden your UI, do a few test flexes to make sure the scenery behind your character looks good, and when to best time your screenshot.
When you're ready to take your screenshot, hit your /flex macro and wait 1-2 seconds; this will allow the animation to reach its peak where you'll want to capture the screenshot.
Hit your screenshot key (default Print Screen) and you're done! Now head to your World of Warcraft\Screenshots\ folder and locate the Olympic Pose screenshot and convert it to .jpg if needed.
Make sure no one is running behind you as you take your screenshot; this is your 15 minutes of fame!

With Wrath of the Lich King's Beta now in full swing, there are quite a few updates over on our network site World of Raids to talk about, as well as a note that WOWDB has been updated with more than 2,500 items, quests, and NPCs.

Over on World of Raids, we have a Guides section where you can find information on the following Wrath of the Lich King dungeons, including loot in many cases:

For lore fans, you'll even find that Brann Bronzebeard appears in Halls of Stone; yep, that's right -- the famed explorer has finally been located! And what's more, you'll be able to go head-to-head with Anub'Arak -- a pivotal character in Arthas' ascension to power -- in Azjol-Nerub.

Wrath of the Lich King Curse Client

The Curse Client is now updated to work with Wrath of the Lich King. This is great news for players in the beta, because it means you can not only contribute content to WOWDB, but you'll also be able to help AddOn authors test their AddOns to make sure they're compatible and working with Wrath of the Lich King when it launches.

UICentral discontinued

Recently IncGamers posted an announcement about their addon updater and why it's being discontinued. Read the details below.

A heads-up to UIC users. UICentral, as created by site member Amthea, has been pulled from the site as it has come to light that there was a copyright infringment inside the application code. An unlicensed key was utilised to create a part of the application, and so to act responsibly, and protect the party invovled, we have pulled the file from the website.

We are dissapointed that this has occured but at the same time pleased that this has been brought to our attention as we do not condone such practices.

With this in mind we are looking to create our own application in-house so that this can not occur in the future. Work will begin immediatly on the new application for mod updating. Thanks to everyone for being so patient while we investigated and checked through everything. We'll update you soon :)

In a nutshell, he used a cracked version of a Java app and got caught. In turn, they threatened to take "legal action" against the site unless it was pulled. Needless to say, however, we would've pulled it anyways.

What does this mean? It means UIC is no longer available IN ANY FORM from this point forward. But as Rush has stated we plan to have another application designed from the ground up without the worry of some piss-ant lawyer breathing down our necks about "distributing applications without checking first that the program used was a legit copy. Ignorance of proper licensing is NO EXCUSE!". Honestly, how the hell are we supposed to check that crap anyways? Ask 'em? Psh....

So as per their "legal request", we'd also like to ask anyone who has dl'd UIC in ANY form to please remove it from their comp. Of course, we can't check this, but apparently they think we can. Next they'll be asking for everyone IP that's dl'd it. But no worries, that's what we call "invasion of privacy", so everyone who's gonna start fretting about that can relax.

Rush has sent a personal apology on the matter and we have met their requests on the matter to avoid "legal action". As of this point, we should be left alone and we can get back to work on important things, like deciding who's buying the next round of Poptarts!

Oh damn, I said a product name! Please don't sue us, Kellogg's!

On a whole different note, we're working on an updated Curse Client, Kody shared some of the information regarding it:

We're currently working on a proper GUI for the Curse Client now. A lot of the functionality you're requesting (as well as a lot you probably haven't thought of) will be included in the UI once it's done. Update: AddOns Homepage Changes

We just pushed live several fixes to our new AddOns Homepage which we released last night. Many of the concerns brought up about the page should now be addressed, so please take another look and let us know what you think!

Change Notes

"Recently Updated Addons" module renamed to "New & Updated Addons".
- Two new links added to "New & Updated Addons" module: "see new" and "see updated".
  - "see new" will take you to a page that displays all of the new Addons on Curse.
  - "see updated" will take you to a page that displays all of the updated Addons on Curse.
    - Both of these pages are now properly sorted with the most recent update appearing at the top.
    - Compilations currently display on the "New Addons" page; we're weighing the benefits versus the detrimental effect this has and will make a decision on them soon.
"New & Updated Addons" and "Your Favorite Updates" now display the date of their update, rather than download count.

We will continue to make changes to this page and others based on feedback, as we want to make sure everyone visiting the website has the best experience when downloading their Addons. If you have any feedback, please let us know in this thread.

A New Look for the AddOns Homepage!

Today we pushed live a major update for our main AddOns page. This is not only a visual improvement, to bring the page in-line with changes made in November to our portal pages, but also to make everything more easily accessible.

In addition to this, we've added several very cool new features to the AddOns page, which we think will be extremely useful not only for new players, but veterans as well. Of course, it's not always about adding new features -- we've also brought back a heavily requested set of categories.

Class Categories Are Back On Curse

You heard right -- Class Categories have returned to Curse.com. Gone are the days of having to use the website's search functionality if you want to locate your favorite Rogue AddOns -- you can now simply click the "Rogue" class icon on the AddOn page to be directed to everything Rogue. This goes for all other classes, too.

Class Category Pages: Other AddOns To Try

Want to know what other Druids are using, aside from class-specific AddOns? No problem -- we've introduced a new module that will tell you exactly that. Is Omen Threat Meter popular among Mages? What about Auctioneer for Shaman? This module will tell you what the most popular AddOns are for each class.

Categories Jump Into the Spotlight

The category section was very lonely all by itself over in the left corner, so we've fixed that. You'll find everything you need in the middle of the page, and we've even created special icons for the more popular categories, so not only can you tell what they are from text, but also simply looking at the icon!

Recommended AddOns

Are you new to World of Warcraft, or modifying your interface? We're here to help, and this new feature module should do just that. We've set up a list of some of the more popular AddOns that we'd recommend a new player take advantage of.

This is in effect for class categories as well, so if you want some recommendations for your new Priest, then you can find them easily by jumping over to the Priest category.

Movers & Shakers

While we have "Most Downloaded" on the page, we also wanted to give some attention to those AddOns that are starting to ramp up in popularity, so that you don't miss out on something extremely cool. With that in mind, we've introduced this new module.

Movers & Shakers will compare download counts between various days, and display the 5 most substantial increases in downloads, with the percentage the AddOn has increased, and of course, sorted in a top-5 list.

AddOn Authors: This is for you -- multiple categories per-AddOn

This is something we've wanted to do for a few months now, and we felt this improvement to the AddOn page was the best time to introduce it. Now you can assign multiple categories to an AddOn, ensuring your AddOn won't go unnoticed!

If you've got a cool Warrior Action Bar tailored for PvP, you can now assign it the following categories: Warrior, PvP, and of course, Action Bars.

Coming soon: AddOn Reviews

We kicked this off with our review of QuestHelper -- in our first Curse Word newsletter issue -- and were very happy with the way it turned out. This Review system will be very similar to what you've seen on other websites for games, but completely tailored to World of Warcraft AddOns.

WOWDB.com launch a success

Greetings everyone.

I am the founder of Curse and I would like to share a few words with you today.
Yesterday, we launched our new World of Warcraft Database, www.wowdb.com. WOWDB represents 8 months of hard work from our development team, and is the product of collaboration among many World of Warcraft players.

Today I have great news. In the past 24-hours, we have already had more than 50,000 visitors. This is encouraging, because we believe that WOWDB will benefit all of us, the World of Warcraft community. As most of you know, all the major players in this market have struggled with innovation recently. We've focused on bringing that innovation back to the game database space, by creating some of the features found on WOWDB, and will continue to do so with new community-driven features each week.

Since launch, we have received more than 400 emails containing bugs, congratulations, feedback. I want to thank all of you who took the time to report the problems you see, and for offering us great ideas for new features.

We are taking care of all of them, one by one.

We designed WOWDB to be as accessible as possible to the World of Warcraft community. We have enhanced standards greatly, and added many new features that can't be found anywhere else:

WOWDB.com -- a Next Generation database

The Curse.com team is excited to introduce our next major project -- WOWDB.com -- a World of Warcraft database website. We've worked over the past several months to create a unique database experience with WOWDB.com, and here's just a short list of the features included in the launch version, with many more to come in the months ahead.

3D Model previews of items and NPC's. You can even preview the item on your character! Simply click on the "Enlarge" or "Preview on Character" buttons where applicable to check the model out in 3D.
Bookmark complex filters so you don't have to enter them again, or clutter up your browser's bookmarks. Check it out -- simply click the "Bookmark this Search" button while logged in and you can save it; up to 20 bookmarks in total can exist!
Tooltip Comparison through the "Pin Item" feature. You can pin one of every slot, and that item will draw next to any tooltips on WOWDB.com -- allowing you to easily compare items. What's better is that if you've imported a character through the Armory, those items will be the default pinned item! Check it out by clicking on the "Pin this Item" button.
Wish Lists allow you to add those goal items -- whether it be a new weapon or a new piece of armor -- as well as any creatures you aspire to tame on your Hunter, and even quests you're looking to complete.
WOWDB.com Search Assistant -- a robust search helper tool that suggests items as you type in partial names, allowing you to quickly locate something even if you're not sure what the full name is. Head over to check it out!
The WOWDB.com Quest Maps are designed to give you all the information you'll ever need. NPC locations, where the quest starts, where it ends, and everything else you'll need to complete that next quest. It's even tabbed, so if the quest takes place in multiple zones, you won't miss a step! Check it out, and of course don't miss the tabbed version of the maps.
Interactive Zone Maps with advanced filtering. Having a hard time locating that Fel Iron in Terokkar? No problem; not only can you filter by minerals, but you can also get specific and learn locations of each node type, without others cluttering your view! This of course works for Herbs, Quests and NPC's as well.
- You can also edit the maps! Found an NPC or point of interest that doesn't exist on WOWDB.com yet? Click the "Edit Map" button and submit it to the WOWDB.com team!
Enhanced Talent Calculator: We've introduced everything you'll find elsewhere, and more. There are also "preset" builds available that can be commented on or rated when logged in. Finally, a way to get a discussion going about a talent build on the build page, rather than remotely!
Import your Armory Profile so that you can designate a "Main" character on WOWDB.com. A Main character introduces two unique features to users logged in; firstly you'll have your Main character's items shown in the Tooltip Comparison feature, and your character's race and gender will be used when clicking the "Preview on Character" button on items! If you can't access the page linked, login or register to get started!

Yep, you read it right - it's not a typo. 2.2.3 is coming soon to the PTR (probably tonight). There are zero details about it currently, so hang back and keep an eye out for what we can expect from this mini-patch.

Please delete your WoWtest folder from within your World of Warcraft Directory and wait until an announcement is made before downloading the new patch.

I would advise not attempting to copy characters until an announcement is made unless you want them to end up on the wrong server like 2.2.2

Now that we're all sad about it not being 2.3, I'll announce something that should cheer everyone up. Curse now supports BBCode and HTML as options in addition to our special Curse Wiki Markup everywhere on the website where you can post content; articles, forums, guides, blogs, etc. Right now you have to choose one of the options, but this should definitely help remove confusion on how to use the Wiki markup.

The best news of all? Line breaks will occur naturally when using BBCode, just like you'd expect them to; no more nasty looking patch notes that need to be manually formatted!
