World of Warcraft

Wowhead.com acquired by 'Affinity Media'

Today we have seen another success, or disappointment, however you may view it, of another large World of Warcraft site. Wowhead.com, one of the fastest growing World of Warcraft fansites, was aquired by Affinity Media.

Reported by several sources, the deal was for approximately $1,000,000, purchased by a company with ties, whether they are still intact or not, to virtual currency marketing.

I don't even know what to think about this. Everybody is entitled to make their money but the quality of WoW sites really takes a major hit from it.

Damn, thats ALOT of money. Maybe I should start a site like that

Yes but it also costs YOU alot to get a site to handle all that data, and all the traffic :D

Can't be good thing that Thottbot, Allakhazam and Wowhead has the same owner. :(

That is crap, i dont use allakhazam nor thottbot anymore since WoWHead appeared (those 2 sux tbh :P ) and with almost 0 ads. Now.... I hope it stays the same as it is. to the end-user. Otherwise it's another "You got EAwned" situation.

Quite a shame - Was without a doubt my preferred site to lookup items and quests...

With this WoWhead news it makes me even more confident about using curse as my 1 stop resource for all things WoW and MMORPG related.

IGE tried to do that once a few years back for more money than WoWHead got and we turned them down. Curse will never be the propery of Secondary Market vendors.

F*ck! All of these sites are selling out! I guess I'm relegated to WowWiki and Curse for all of my WoW info.

WoWHeads calculator was the best, though. Very fast and small URLs that would fit into comments in Ventrilo. :(

Hell yea, this is actually good news for Curse... didn't actually think about it that way

@Athrapy : Who says your site will be any better than mine ? :D

@amoa : Well, in the beginning it isnt as much, but as the site starts growing you'll get money from ads anyway... both for yourself and the servers

Agreed. When it comes to talent calculators, WoWHead really shined. I think that's part of where their popularity increase came from, even more than items. During TBC beta they always had the latest talent calc available for every class, even before the official Blizzard calc was updated, and it ran even better.

It's a shame to hear this news as a player for sure.
