Update: New site entering beta!

A couple of months ago, it was announced that Curse has been busy working on the website and client ( http://blogs.curse.com/25/details/863/ ). We’re pleased to announce that we are very close to re-launching both of these. The client has been in beta for quite a while, and we've made tremendous progress with it with your help. To download the latest version, please go to http://www.wardb.com/client.aspx.

The new Curse website is nearly complete. We will be entering beta at the end of this week, and allowing users to come test it out. For a list of what’s new, refer to the previous post. We will make a news article detailing how to test the site and other news shortly.

Projects not imported into CurseForge & Compilatio

When we did the initial import from Curse.com to CurseForge.com we didn't include properly categorized UI Packs & Compilations.

While we are working on a new system to help handle UI Packs properly we have an interim solution of these projects being manageable via the old Curse.com admin interfaces.

We'll finish importing these projects in the upcoming weeks, but for now you can continue to manage them on Curse.com.

Curse Quest 2008

With the Curse offices located in San Francisco, we had a very unique opportunity during the Game Developers Conference last month, and we set a goal of making sure everyone not from the town enjoyed their visit.

With that in mind, in early January we began planning the Curse Quest -- an evening of entertainment, drinks, food, and a time to kick back and relax after a hard first day of GDC.

We picked out the Fluid Ultra Lounge as our place to host what would turn out to be the most eventful and fun party of the night -- and one of the best of GDC. We were also lucky to bring in the incredibly talented local duo HardNox for the evening, and they did a superb job entertaining the party guests.

Here are a few images from the party; hopefully we can do this again next year, as it was a great time had by all who attended!

Now the question: Who is up for this next year?! Share your thoughts in the comments -- we'd love to hear ideas for future themes; this one mostly focused on Curse as it stands now, and what we have coming up in the near future.

Bug fixes and even more bug fixes

Hey everyone,

The last week Curse.com have had several issues with anything from image uploading to images not displaying and video uploading, problems with downloading files and several other problems including issues with news not displaying correctly and also videos sometimes not streaming.

Our developers have been actively working on fixing all the problems with the site since they were first discovered and they feel that most problems have been resolved.

Summary:

Image uploading should now work correctly
Media uploading should now work correctly
Viewing images when logged out now works
Downloading files should work a lot better now, no really, it does!
You should be able to download files via the Curse Client
If you previously experienced problems with streaming videos -- it should now work
Video uploading should now work correctly (for real this time)

If you discover anything that still might be broken or not function as intended, please let us know.

File Widgets Launch

We have launched one of the many upcoming widgets, the file widget. It will allow you to embed (in Curse Wiki posts or on your own websites) a small widget giving you information about your project including the latest version and the number of downloads.

You will be able to grab the widget by clicking the share button on the left of a project's details page.

We have pushed live an update to the site tonight which included a few key things:

A few fixes for account activation.
Several fixes for account login.
Updated news RSS feeds (check the subscribe links on portals, they're now site specific again).
Some other minor fixes.

Downloads and Login Revamp

You've probably noticed that we've been rolling out some new (and somewhat annoying) changes over the last couple of days. I'd like to let you know that we've finally ironed out what we think are the last issues :)

That being said, I'd like to present to you the new authentication system, and the new download pages.

The authentication system was revamped over the last few weeks in order to allow us to share accounts over several "network" websites. We have an upcoming WoW database site for example, which will allow you to login using your Curse.com account and password.

We have also revamped a few of the pieces of the download section:

You will see brand new details and version download pages with a much enhanced look bringing them closer in line with the rest of the new design.
We have improved the "lightbox"-esque effects when viewing screenshots and similar tasks.
There is now code to share a file tooltip (via JavaScript) on an external website by clicking the "share" button on a files detail page.
We have enhanced the tooltip mechanism to be much more robust and have removed the on-demand (ajax) tooltips.
The RSS feeds have been cleaned up and you can now view access them for only a specific site (such as World of Warcraft)
All of the pages which list the top 100 X have been cleaned up. Examples are the New Downloads, Top Rated Downloads, etc.
We have added a new "Recommended Downloads" feature. This will show you what other users also liked based on their usage of files.
We have added the "Other X" box which will show you other popular files within the category of the file.
There is now a button to "install via curse client" right on the files detail page.
The list of downloads is now powered by our javascript library and will make it so there is much less scrolling, but still easy to see all versions of a file.

Free to Play Portal and More!

We are glad to now offer our Free to Play portal on Curse. On it you will find news, images, videos, downloads, and forums for all of your favorite free MMOs. You can also browse and rate released games as well as see upcoming ones.

There are now new skins on the Starcraft 2 portal as well as the Tabula Rasa portal.

Login Hotfix

EVE Online Portal Now Open

Great news for EVE Online fans here on Curse -- we've now opened an EVE Online game portal. You can reach the portal by visiting http://eve.curse.com/ or through the "Select a Portal" tab on the navigation menu.

We hope everyone enjoys this latest addition to the lineup of Curse portals, and don't forget to add your EVE Online characters to your my Curse profile!

Hotfixes Incoming

We've identified numerous bugs, whether they've been existant or were created with the latest version of the site, they'll get squashed today.

Update: Hotfixes since 11/30

Preview works again, as well as article submission.
The list of strange markup types has been corrected.
Several issues with tooltips have been resolved.
The Vanguard database races links work now.
The navigation on a few portals has been updated.
The mediabox (or topslot) was automatically generating old news articles in it. It now has a cutoff date.

Live on 11/30

"My Projects" and several other pages are not listing everything they should.
"Messages" is not reflecting when you've read a message or archived it.
Threads are incorrectly recording the number of replies.
When creating a new thread or replying to one it was incorrectlty saving the markup type as Curse Wiki (no matter what you selected).
Latest threads widget was missing threads which weren't posted for a specific game on portals.
Featured Image/Video were never changing -- there will now be cutoff dates.
New friend requests weren't showing the number next to it.
The mediabox (or topslot) was showing links to cursebeta.com (get off our staging server! :P)
Some news posts (made in "generic" topics, such as "Other") were throwing errors.
There is now an option to "Set as Profile Picture" on images in your private gallery.
Internet Explorer 6 will work again (but a few images might look funny)
Opera 9 works properly again on homepages
In some instances you were unable to reply to a thread.
Files will now show a different confirmation message when it is sent to the moderation queue.
Files will no longer set the default download to a file thats in the moderation queue until it's been accepted.
There is now an option in the screenshots administration for your file which let 's you change the default image.
blogs.curse.com will load again :)
The community news feed site links will now link to pages which contain a listing of all of their posts.
A critical error causing the HTML parser to throw up random stuff has been fixed.
Browsing news articles will now allow you to break down by category if you're viewing by topic (e.g. all World of Warcraft articles).

We will update this post throughout the day as more fixes are put into place. If you have problems please drop us an email over at bugs[at]curse.com.

Account Fixes

We recently pushed live a (pretty major) fix for some account issues that were happening on Curse. If you were having problems logging in (receiving a server error), or problems activating your account, your account should now be fixed.

If it is not, or you have another problem, please let us know by sending us a message, or, if you cannot login, drop an email to bugs[at]curse.com.

Halloween @ Curse

Watch out, the ninjas are coming for you! The great thing about being a part of the Curse team is that everyone knows when to have a good time. Yesterday several members of the Curse team came to work ready to celebrate Halloween in style, with their costumes in tow. Heck, our resident bunny even wore his costume to work on his motorcycle!

This is a fairly short blog post, but I wanted to share some images taken at the Curse office yesterday, because the spirit of Halloween is certainly not lost on us, even in a work environment. Check 'em all out in my personal gallery: Curse Halloween Pics, or just view them below - your choice!

We managed to squash a bug with the favorites the other day that was causing them to not update when blogs had new entries. Luckily for all our blogging fans out there, the bug is no more :)

You could, for example, subscribe to our dev blog, and we'll happily send you a notification every time we post about new features or updates to the website.

(We have some uber top secret stuff coming soon!)

Image Issues

Hey folks,

Due to a database error this morning all images uploaded prior to this blog posting are currently unavailable. We're working on getting this sorted out as soon as possible, and expect things to be back to normal within a couple hours.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause in the meantime.
