GC2007: Interview With Jeff "Tigole" Kaplan

We have an incredibly long and informative interview with Jeff Kaplan for everyone tonight. For those not aware, he goes by Tigole on the forums, and is one of the Lead Designers of World of Warcraft.

Tigole was kind enough to spend 25 minutes with us, so as you can imagine we had a great opportunity to ask a ton of questions. He talks about a wide variety of things, including the expansion, and even some things coming before the expansion goes live. You can check it out below.

Credit to Faerlun for three questions which he submitted to us as part of our question-taking article last weekend. The questions asked about whether players will be able to unlock the Death Knight for all realms at once, or if it would be limited to the realm the player unlocked the class on, whether Hunters would be getting some attention for Arena viability, and how Blizzard is going to approach the gear gaps between veteran Arena teams and those who are just starting out.

var FO_116 = { movie:"http://dev.curse-gaming.com/static/flash/flvplayer.swf", width:"625", height:"380", majorversion:"7", build:"0", bgcolor:"#FFFFFF", allowfullscreen:"true", flashvars:"file=http://videos.cursebeta.com/stream2/premium/639.flv&autostart=true" }; $("#flvplayer_116").click(function(event) { UFO.create(FO_116, "flvplayer_116"); $(this).unbind('click'); });

Keep an eye out on our Leipzig Games Convention portal for more coverage of the event. We'll have a lot more video interviews like this one with Tigole coming in the days ahead, including a lot of the highly anticipated MMO's to be released in the near future.

So here's a question for everyone: What do you think of the new Curse video intro? It's the first video we've used it in. :)

    /thumbs up.

If he says "Excellent" one more time, I AM GOING TO RIP HIS HEAD OFF.

  • Sat, Aug 25 2007 4:46 AM ()

Jeff, people still will pick warriors for arenas over a hunter because they can DPS and don't die without leaving a mark,(which the hunter obviously does not) I believe THAT's the problem.

Great interview, looking forward to all the new lowbie stuff for all my alts :)

As for the intro - pretty nice artwork there, it's flashy enough, and not annoyingly long either!

Urgh. There's no way in hell they're going to put MS and manadrain on the same class, is there?

The video intro is pretty spiffy.

Thanks for the vid curse. It answered a couple of questions people have been bugging me about in my 2.3/2.4/expansion guide :-)

    And the intro looked good.

thanks for the vid, answered some things i was wondering, although as a holy pally, i'm praying we get some of those spell dmg buffs mentioned for priests, and also that hunters NEVER get mortal shot... come on guys, i already have to put up with mortal strike, wound poison, mana burn, viper sting, cyclone, mana drain, mind numbing poison, curse of tongues, etc etc... lets not put it all on one class shall we?

OMG ... Ranged Mortal Strike for hunters?!? WTF ... Health debuffs completely screw over the viability of healers. That is all healers can DO is heal and you are destroying their viability by a spammable non-removable debuff?? Mortal Strike, Wounding Poison, and Unstable Affliction wasn't enough of an *** raping for support spec/classes that you want to continue the PvP trend of being DPS heavy in the arenas.

What the hell is people's adversion to allowing healers to BE HEALERS as well as their problem with longer battles?

So where is priests unremovable ranged 50% DPS debuff? If I cut all warlocks/mages DPS by 50% for the same mana cost or Warriors/Rogues DPS by 50% for the same Energy/Rage cost they would finally have some understand how BS Healing debuffing is.

Bitching does not help.Constructive arguing might :) Kody great intro. Runs more smoothly then the current one. And two thumbs up to Jeff who`s not afraid to bite back if u taunt him too much imo :)witch is healthy as always cause his the most /loved or whatever person from Blizzy . Stop bitching about my Hunter class too btw its bad enough that only a few of us get to actually raid HighEnd(exluding farmers/stupid children/or man whores who make this class so hated and disliked, they can suck my Mount)Cheers.

YES, ADD ANOTHER THING THAT OVER RIDES ROGUE WOUND POISONS. Fucking idiots. Get a clue, FROST TRAP = melee can't stay on their focus target, and can't keep up MS without BoF. That should be more then enough.

    Yet another whiner.

I have a question for Tigole :-) I know you can't ask it but I would like to know:

Why Blizzard are purposely fixing the outcome of 2v2 and 3v3 so that certain teams and ONLY certain teams get the chance to play World of Warcraft on a pro level?
Why are Blizzard bending the rules if you know a dev and allowing certain players to move from PVE servers to PVP servers? Also add entire guilds to that question.
Why Blizzard are still charging £8.99 a month when it is obvious that this is not needed?

You have a good business plan and company but I anticipate that in the next few years, some very questionable actions on their behalf will begin to come to light. This IS NOT a World of Warcraft thing. This is Blizzard becoming corporate and starting on the same path Microsoft were on when they first made it big.

Intro is nice, Interview is great except for one thing. Next time have someone ask the questions who does not run his words together and become incomprehensible about 30% of the time.

hmm is there a download option as it is clear that curse dont have enough bandwith to stream as it is impossible to actually watch this now, it just keeps buffering and never actually show anything. This is testing both IE7 and opera.

oh and should add the few seconds id did get to see was with the curse intro and it looks ok;)

Main think I'm concerned about, and it may not seem big to most, is the fact that we're gonna fight Malygos. Is that saying Arthas is more powerful than a dragon aspect? We couldn't kill him because if it follows lore that would pretty much destroy the balance of the world and all that. I dunno, seems really out of place to me.
