Repost: How to Install Addons

This is not my work. Just a repost to allow me to link to when I am trying to help people. All content from here on in belings to Curse.com. I am no way affiliated with them! Do not bother posting questions or comments on this article since it is NOT my work. Contact Curse.com and tell them that they need to update their instructions. Not that they can make it much simpler. People just read and follow it is not hard!

Installation Guide

  1. Exit "World of Warcraft" completely
  2. Download the mod you want to install
    • Make a folder on your desktop called "My Mods"
    • Save the .zip/.rar files to this folder.
    • If, when you try to download the file, it automatically "opens" it... you need to RIGHT click on the link and "save as..." or "Save Target As".
  3. Extract the file - commonly known as 'unzipping'
Do this ONE FILE AT A TIME!
    • Windows
      • Windows XP has a built in ZIP extractor. Double click on the file to open it, inside should be the file or folders needed. Copy these outside to the "My Mods" folder.
      • WinRAR: Right click the file, select "Extract Here"
      • WinZip: You MUST make sure the option to "Use Folder Names" is CHECKED or it will just extract the files and not make the proper folders how the Authors designed
    • Mac Users
      • StuffitExpander: Double click the archive to extract it to a folder in the current directory.
  4. Verify your WoW Installation Path
That is where you are running WoW from and THAT is where you need to install your mods.
  5. Move to the Addon folder
    • Open your World of Warcraft folder. (default is C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\)
    • Go into the "Interface" folder.
    • Go into the "AddOns" folder. (If the folder does not exist, create it)
    • In a new window, open the "My Mods" folder.
    • The "My Mods" folder should have the "Addonname" folder in it.
    • Move the "Addonname" folder into the "AddOns" folder
  6. Start World of Warcraft
  7. Make sure AddOns are installed
    • At the Character Select screen, look in lower left corner for the "addons" button.
    • If button is there: make sure all the mods you installed are listed and make sure "load out of date addons" is checked.
    • If the button is NOT there: means you did not install the addons properly. Look at the above screenshots. Try repeating the steps or getting someone who knows more about computers than you do to help.

Translations

When you download a mod, please be sure that the mod is compatible with your translation of wow. Some mods only work on the US versions, while some only work on some of the various European versions. These variations are called "Localizations".

TOC Numbers (Out of Date Mods)

When Blizzard patches WoW, they change the Interface number. This means that all mods will be "out of date" unless or until the author releases a new version for that interface. Some people go into the .toc files and update the numbers themselves, but this is STRONGLY advised against as it will cause problems locating possible incompatibilities addons. When you log into WoW after a patch, you DO NOT have to delete your interface directory. All you have to do is simply tell WoW to ignore the interface numbers and load all the mods anyway. All you have to do is, while at the "character select" screen, look in the lower left corner and click on the "addons" button. A window will pop up listing all your installed mods.

If you look in the upper left corner of that window there should be a box that says "Load Out of Date AddOns". You want to CHECK this box. Now simply go into WoW normally and all your mods should load. As of the 1.9 patch, you will have to do this after EVERY patch/update that Blizzard posts! If you encounter any problems with a mod after a patch, please be sure to let the author of the mod know so they can fix it.

Mac Support

WoW addons are not platformed based. As such, they can be used on either Mac or PC. You can extract both .zip and .rar files on a Mac using StuffitExpander.

I too have a Mac and I don't want to have to learn how to "unzip" a file (and download another program to do so) if its unnecessary. You see, I can easily get 1 addon to work on my mac but as soon as i want more, WoW does not recognize them. It only recognizes the first one I downloaded!! How is it that I can get 1 addon to work without having to learn how to "unzip" it but as soon as i want more, i must? The whole thing seems screwy to me. There must be an easier way.

Ok, I'll take a swing at it even though I've only owned a Mac for less than one year.  Please remember that using Firefox really helps & that's the ONLY way I know at the moment.  If, for example, I want Deadly Boss Mods.  1.) Open Curse client & select "Addons" at the top, then "Find an Addon" under that & "Get List" in the middle of the window.  2.) Find & select Deadly Boss Mods.  3.) Click on "See Addon Details" at the bottom of the window.

If you use Firefox, you should see it open & automatically takes you to wow.curse.com/.../deadly-boss-mods.aspx.  If it doesn't, just click on the link again.  I then just scroll down & pick the revision that I want & select it, which takes me to the Download page.  4.) Select manual install.  The file automatically downloads to Firefox Downloads & should pop up on your screen right away.  This is a great place to run a scan for bugs.  5.) Double left click to open the .zip file on your desktop & it will make a folder automatically.  6.) Open the HD where you have World of Warcraft installed.  7.) In the left column, under "Places", left click on "Applications".  8.) Open the World of Warcraft folder & then the "Interface" folder.  9.) Right click on the "Addons" folder & select "Make Alias" from the drop-down menu.  That folder, "Addons Alis", should show up immediately.  10.) Drag the alias folder to your Desktop over in the left column.  11.)  Minimize all open windows & once at your desktop, drag the blue DBM folder over you Addons alias folder & drop.

    I'm using Leopard 10.5.6

If this doesn't work for you, please forget you ever saw me.  8-)

These directions are clear and should be helpful.  I have a Mac, and I went into My Questhelper Folders and couldn't find AddonName Folder.  Can anyone help Mac Users??

This is not meant to be rude...

BUT... here is the thing. In bright red right at the top it states "Do not bother posting questions or comments on this article since it is NOT my work." Now if you can't read that part of the instructions why bother posting here since it is clear that you didn't read the entire article and you most likely missed some of the steps. ....just saying.
