U.S. Spies Want to Find Terrorists in World of Warcraft

Be careful who you frag. Having eliminated all terrorism in the real world, the U.S. intelligence community is working to develop software that will detect violent extremists infiltrating World of Warcraft and other massive multiplayer games, according to a data-mining report from the Director of National Intelligence.

The Reynard project will begin by profiling online gaming behavior, then potentially move on to its ultimate goal of "automatically detecting suspicious behavior and actions in the virtual world."

  • The cultural and behavioral norms of virtual worlds and gaming are generally unstudied. Therefore, Reynard will seek to identify the emerging social, behavioral and cultural norms in virtual worlds and gaming environments. The project would then apply the lessons learned to determine the feasibility of automatically detecting suspicious behavior and actions in the virtual world.
  • If it shows early promise, this small seedling effort may increase its scope to a full project.

Reynard will conduct unclassified research in a public virtual world environment. The research will use publicly available data and will begin with observational studies to establish baseline normative behaviors.

The publicly available report -- which was mandated by Congress following earlier concerns over data-mining programs -- also mentions several other data-mining initiatives. These include:

  • Video Analysis and Content Extraction - software to automatically identify faces, events and objects in video
  • Tangram - A system that wants to create surveillance and threat warning system that evaluates known threats and finds unknown threats to issue warnings ahead of an attack
  • Knowledge Discovery and Dissemination - This tool is reminiscent of the supposedly-defunct Total Information Awareness program. It seeks to access disparate databases to find patterns of known bad behavior. The program plans to work with domestic law enforcement and Homeland Security.

The report gives no indication why the find-a-terrorist cell in Sims project is called Reynard, though that is a traditional trickster figure in literature.

well i feel sorry for the guy that has to monitor trade chat...there's more sarcastic, ignorant, arrogant, idiotic, and just plain angry comments in trade chat then anywhere else i've ever seen. The internet seems to give people an air of security to where they feel they can say whatever they want without fear of consequence. So yeah....i feel sorry for the guys that have to monitor that chat...

Let us hope that at least in the EU that Blizzard understand what the SafeHarbor treaty is and that they can be fined many millions if found to be breaking it.

I am sure all those American people who suddenly find their country with an eviscerated economy will thank Bush with all their heart that so much money was spent wisely on pursuing so called "terrorists" and how Bush did the right thing instead of spending it on minor things like hospitals, schools, roads, investment, medicare, pensioner support, support for Iraq veterans etc etc.

This is probably one of the worst ideas that could be put into World of Warcraft... Cause EVERYONE knows that terrorists are going to spend $15 a month just to talk to each other about when they are going to attack someplace next. For free MMO's i could see this being used, but not for PtP MMO's. Way to go Bush on making everyone more paranoid than ever humanly possible before...

... for the love of, Blizzard needs to use some loopholes to get our privacy back. D: The idea of this system is great, but the system is stupid and is a serious invasion of privacy.

You are ALL missing the point... MMO's are currently a very good way for anyone with compy and internet access to communicate effectively and anonomously... Just party up and you can plan the next 9-11 with no one the wiser... use game-speak and it wont even flag in the logs. All you need to ever know is your contact's toon name, server and when to meet with them. no more meeting in person, therby lessening your chances of being caught, and if you are there is very little you can say.
With allmost every other form of communication being extensively and randomly monitored, MMO's offer a safe, secure and cheap method of global communication.
The Only danger? Terrorist decides to actualy explore the game, becomes so addicted that he gives up his life of terror and forms a Leet raiding guild insead.

So... while I personaly HATE the idea that I amd all of you are going to be monitored every day in yet another aspect of our lives... and saying Im gonna bomb that bush is gonna get you a visit from homeland security, the sad thing is, they have a point for once.

With the lack of intelligence shown by much of our government, I wouldn't be surprised if their program just looked for people typing arabic. Or guild names with any combination of the words "al" and "qaeda" in them. I also like how part of their study is to determine what is the norm in the virtual world...that should be interesting.

It's funny how last time it was Xbox live now its World of Warcraft for some reason if you going to waste billions of dollors on people who are going to Raid Towns or Citys in the game because you believe they are Terrorist your wasting money, If they are ganking the same person in the game over and over in Battlegrounds are they consider Terrorist?

Gold Farmers and Account stealers maybe as far as I know no one fucking cares not even Blizzard if you going to study the behavior of how players in the game act in messages they say. Base on proof by ABC or CBS news report few months back about a First Person Shooter games, that Teenage kids who live in another country are being recruted by Terrorist groups to do battle in the "virtual world." with with Americans, thats a laugh because we can kick there asses anyways no matter how good of a player they are.

WOW some of your points are really retarded... do you guys really think that the US gov't is doing this to arrest people by using a video game? The awser is no they are using it to track down terrorist in other countries. And plus they wont really be playing, sorry for any spies... but instead they will be watching what other people are tying and have been typing. Everything that you have done in the history of you playing world of warcraft is recorded so they will be reading. They have professionals that look at behavior and they have tracked down terrorist through myspace AIM and other stuff so i doubt they will have a problem with this . and my last point i would like to make is that the ARE USING THIS TO TRACK DOWN TERRORIST, so they will be looking at where people are logging in from like which countries and mostly look at thier accounts first.

Then comes the question: what is a terrorist?

I wonder how many in the US government who can give a straight and precise answer to that...
Do they even have a clear definition?

I don't know about you guys, but to me it just sounds like somebody's just being paranoid here.
Take a look at this "War against terror"-campaign that mister Bush & CO. here is running; sure they may have killed a couple of people whose intentions weren't all good, but isn't tracking down and killing people also some kind of terror?I wonder what things look like from the "terrorists'" point of view...

He may have killed a few so called terrorists, but I'm also pretty damn sure that he, by doing this, also has got a couple of new recriuts to al-Quaida and the other gangs down there.

Now, I'm not saying that I support terror in any way, but I think everyone should stop to take a look around a little bit once in a while, to get an idea of what's actually happening. =)

--just my two cents, like it or leave it ;-)
