Death Knight Abilities From WWI '08

News | July 1, 2008 (2 months, 1 week ago) | by Kody | Filed in World of Warcraft

Following up on Saturday's First Impressions article, we have more details on Death Knight abilities for you, direct from the Worldwide Invitational where Wrath of the Lich King was playable. Note that the mechanics of these abilities are still being balanced, so it's possible that many of them will change prior to release, or even beta.

I decided to fill my role as an explorer of the fine world of Azeroth and ran around Eastern Plaguelands. At Light's Hope Chapel I came upon a Death Knight trainer, and of course I had to check out all of the abilities the class gets. While I didn't have time to check everything and get exact details, I did memorize the gist of many of the abilities. Check them out below! We also weren't allowed to film or take pictures of the screens, so sadly I don't have direct tooltip examples.

Death Knight Abilities

These are not all of the abilities; it's the ones I noticed you receive fairly early on in your leveling. It's also possible more will be added for these levels, or some of these may be removed before the expansion launches.

  • Chains of Ice -- Roots the target in place, and once the target breaks free of the root, a movement speed snare is applied for the next 10 seconds. The potency of the snare weakens every second. 20 second cooldown.
  • Raise Dead -- Raises the target corpse to fight by your side as a ghoul. If the target corpse is not humanoid, you need "Corpse Dust" to complete the spell. 5 minute cooldown.
    • In the Unholy tree you can find talents that improve the damage done by your ghoul, as well as those that reduce the cooldown on Raise Dead and also increase the duration your ghoul stays out.
  • Frost Presence -- Increases armor by 45% and threat generated by 25%.
  • Mind Freeze -- 4 second interupt, also deals frost damage, but costs Runic Power. 10 second cooldown.
  • Blood Boil -- This ability seems to work like the Warrior's Challenging Shout ability based on the tooltip information. It causes all of the diseases on targets within the range of the AE to "erupt," dealing damage and forcing them to attack you.
  • Death Strike -- Deals 60% weapon damage and if the target dies within 6 seconds and rewards Experience or Honor it heals the Death Knight.
  • Strangulate -- Silences the target, preventing them from casting spells.
  • Death and Decay -- This is a ground targeted AoE from the description. It deals damage every second to any enemies in it and has a chance to fear them.
  • Obliterate -- This ability deals weapon damage plus a flat amount per disease on your target, but removes them.
    • Note: I noticed a talent that gives a fairly substantial chance to not remove the diseases when using Obliterate.
  • Pestilence -- This spreads the disease from your target to nearby targets, dealing damage and inflicting any targets hit with the diseases being spread. Seems like a cleave ability.
  • Degeneration -- This ability deals damage and places a stacking disease on the target. Tooltip says it stacks up to 3 times. Seems like a good ability to use along with Plague Strike to boost Obliterate's damage. Unknown if multiple stacks causes Obliterate to do additional damage, but doubtful.
    • Note: This ability will also corrupt Healing Over Time spells on the target, causing the Damage Over Time portion of it to deal additional damage. Unfortunately I didn't have access to dueling a Priest or Druid to find out how potent it becomes, but it definitely seems like an anti-Druid ability for Arenas.

After playing around for a bit with the base abilities I came to the conclusion that the Death Knight will no doubt be one of the most challenging classes to play in World of Warcraft, with learning Rune management and how to properly allocate Runic Power into your various abilities that use it both being very important to the success of the character. You'll also likely never reach a point where you have nothing to do -- you simply have too many abilities to use and your Rune cooldowns are only 10 seconds each; you have two of each type on Rune on your sword -- but there's no word on whether being able to change them will actually go in -- it was mentioned back at BlizzCon.

Something else I noticed that ensures you'll never have one of those frustrations where your Plague Strike gets dodged and you're stuck waiting 10 seconds before you can actually do damage; your Rune cooldowns refresh instantly if your ability misses, is dodged, or is parried (only the Runes used on that ability). This didn't seem to hold true for "spells" like Icy Touch, though, as mine missed a few times while playing and it didn't refresh the Rune. Bug, perhaps? Or maybe it's only intended to function that way on the melee abilities... who knows.

Regardless, the Death Knight is going to be a very fun class to play if it goes live anywhere similar to the current state it's in; Blizzard has definitely done a great job of creating a hybrid tank/dps class that does its job as well as the others do, but in a different way. I definitely suggest everyone buying the expansion check it out -- though not right away -- I want to get mine to 80 as soon as possible! Once I've collected my thoughts on the talent trees for the Death Knight in general, I'm going to be writing another article concerning the trees and the Death Knight's potential impact on the PVP game -- especially in Arenas.

Gameplay is a lot more important than graphics.. which is why my AoC account is canceled. It would be very cool to see WoW update the look of the game a bit, but I won't complain if the don't. I'm a little worried about all the death knights that will be running around though.. it's going to be impossible for any of them outside huge corporate run guilds to get any instance runs lol.

that degenerate spell sounds very interesting i just hope it works on bosses like the hexlord in ZA that would do insane damage by far expectually when it is removed lol

WoW's graphics are designed to be playable on everything from loaves of bread to rigs cooled with liquid oxygen. That is, and has always been, its strongest selling point. We were never promised better graphics with the upcoming expansion like ice shaders and new flame graphics, which we've been getting.
The fact is that Blizzard:

A) Wants WoW to look like this. The bright, comic-book-like graphics are part of Warcraft going back to the original RTS.
B) Blizzard has several projects going on for WoW, all requiring manpower. Were they to reassign people to a graphical overhaul it would cause content releases and expansion release to suffer. Hiring new talent would also be problematic, as they would have to first hire a sizable number of strong, suitable applicants, train them and orient them to there they should be, and that's before the overhaul could even begin. Remember EVE Online's overhaul? All they did was update spaceship textures and shaders, and it took their force YEARS.
C) There is no overwhelming demand from the majority of the WoW subscription base to update graphics, so Blizzard has no reason to start. Most of the 10 million subscriptions are from people with mid-level rigs and the know it - ever seen the message "Submitting non-personal system specifications" in the login? That's the hardware survey.
D) Some people like how the game looks. I know, it's a bizarre way of thinking, but some people totally dig the whole "simple polygons, good textures, good artwork" way instead of slapping bloom effects, dynamic shadows and normal mapping on everything and calling it "realistic." Those kinds of graphics can crush even the quadruple-core quad-SLI I-blew-my-tax-refund-on-this gaming rigs when more than, say, 25 players are interacting on a screen.

Don't get one's knickers in a twist. Blizzard will update the graphics when there's the need and ability to do so.

Darth, I think you're missing my point. I did not suggest that WoW should take up realistic graphics. The colorful almost cartoon graphics is for many, a strong attractive factor to the game. I was merely suggesting that the argument has been made in the past that upgrading the graphic engine would be too much of a strain when you add in 24 other players and however many mobs there happen to be in an instance at any given moment. That argument while valid if you play on a load a bread, doesn't hold true with those of us blessed liquid oxygen cooled rigs.
Going back to Titan Quest for a moment, they heavily employ bump mapping technology. This allows for the appearance of deeply textured floors and walls and allow for an immersive feeling. Walking through an Egyptian pyramid looks like there is years of painstakingly carved hieroglyphics surrounding you. Or the realistically detailed shadow of a skeleton cast against a decorative sand-tiled Greek mosaic - it's worth putting out the $20 at a local gaming store just to see what I'm talking about if you haven't experienced Titan Quest yet. The floors and walls in WoW for the most part are made up of bland textures that have been blown up too far.
And the shadows from us aren't bland semi circles, why are those that our toons cast? You don't have to lose the cartoon by bringing up the graphics. Look at any pre-rendered Bliz video for an idea of what the game COULD look like. All I am asking for is the ability to have great graphics in an otherwise great game and you can feel free turn them down if they're too much for you. As for retooling the entire game's textures alla Eve, that's not what I'm asking for at all. We're getting a new expansion, do it there. People would certainly understand the greatly improved graphics of the new content mixing in with the old world bleh.
Yes, Bliz would have to hire some people. But that's all they're doing at the moment. Every website they own has links to job postings. Granted, they're probably related to Starcraft and Diablo for the most part but I humbly suggest they take some of the development team from those games to make WoW better first. Yes, that may push back a few Blizzard development cycles, and we all know that that's never happened before ;-)
I think there's more behind their reluctance to significantly upgrade their graphics however. There's maybe two or three more expansions out of WoW and then even those with the breadloaf PCs of the future are going to start complaining. I think that the real reason for holding back on the graphics is World of Warcraft 2. I'll bet that the largest selling factor behind WoW 2 is going to be a greatly improved graphical engine and that Bliz doesn't want significant or "real" improvements made to WoW to detract from that. If you think that the army of newly hired Bliz employees are heading solely to games that they've announced and that there isn't a replacement to the most successful MMO in history isn't in the works, then you have a larger issue than accepting the current graphic situation in WoW.
All good things to those who wait. I for one am willing to wait if it means we get better. My knickers don't have to be even slightly twisted at the moment to ask that Bliz acknowledge that there is a demand by many for better graphics and as for the ability... It's been there for years.

/agree with richantram99. They are different games that will appeal to different people too. AoC is hands down graphical pwnage. But ... argue me this ... the game is designed to appeal mostly to sexually frustrated single males between the ages of 18 and 35. Think about it. What woman is going to want to play a game where she dinks around with a slave girl? Oh yeah ... Forgot about Elen DeGeneris. Never mind.

I do think that WoW is due a graphical upgrade, however it would be essential for Blizz to keep to their existing art style when they do it, and make it essentially the same (just prettier) than the current graphics.

I think we should see the Diablo III graphics as an idea of how WoWs could look in the future, since they both seem to have a similar art style.

"Comparing WoW to AoC is like comparing Picasso to Da Vinci. One is intentionally abstract, the other is intentionally realistic. Picasso did not need to upgrade his painting style."
- Vrey, 2008

for a good indication to how Warhammer Plays/Looks try LotROnline in essence they are exactly the same, just without a PVP element
